We've lost another long time, loyal Iona fan, with the passing of Jim Waters. Jim and his wife Pat, as season ticket holders would faithfully travel down from their Poughkeepsie home, in all sorts of weather to see their Gaels. Jim's connection to Iona BB goes back to his undergraduate days, when he was a team manager, under Jim McDermott. Jim's life is worthy of an Horathio Alger story. In a nutshell, while at Iona, he helped support his mother/family by working nights at a Park Ave. hi-rise as an elevator operator (8PM-8AM). Jump on the subway and return home for breakfast and then hitch a ride to Iona. His sleep was mostly in the overnight hours when there was little elevator activity. And that was also homework/study time. After graduation, his outgoing personality came in handy as a salesman for Johns Manville (I believe). Eventually, he started his own building supply business, Jim Waters Corp, with warehouses in NY and CT. He sold the business a few years back and was ready to live the "Good Life". Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with Alzheimers. But, according to his wife, Jim never lost that smile, which would brighten considerably with any news about Iona BB success. May he RIP.

Super, on Friday, I watched Jim's Memorial Service. It was streamed from St. Michael's the Archangel church in Sarasota? Is that near your home?

Jim was one of the all-time greats. He was as loyal as the day was long. He did have a great smile. I bet Jim could tell many stories (like JB did) of working for Coach McDermott (winningest basketball coach in Iona history). Coach McDermott was a character. He worked as an advisor in athletics when I was a freshman and then became the first MAAC Commissioner. Seems like yesterday --- and it was more than 40 years ago. Rest in peace, Jim Waters. A proud alum and son of Blessed Edmund Rice.

It was a very nice service, and I'm guessing that they have their masses in a tent. At least it looked that way to me.
