I know very few of you care, but what the heck, it's late on a Saturday night, at a time I should be getting some, and instead I'm watching Tijuana play UNAM im Liga MX.
The Women's team won their third straight and 5th out of the last 7 by coming from behind with a 25-12 run in the last 8 minutes or so at Siena. The games I've watched have showed a steady improvement over the last month. Defense has been strong all year, but lately the 4th quarter defense has been stellar. They are finally getting some scoring. Fairfield seems to be the class of the conference, but after that it is wide open. If they can keep this late push through February they have an outside chance to get a first round bye. Haven't seen enough of Fairfield to know if they are beatable. We may find out on Thursday when they visit th HAC. Might have to come to town to make that game. This way I could go up to Siena the following night. Would be cool if the team had a few people show up Thursday. Anyway, they are playing better. Go Gaels!

The team started league play, 0-5, but has now won three straight and five of seven. The two losses have been by a combined THREE points. In the past two games Olivia Vezaldenos and Juana Camilion have gone over the 1K point mark. While most of Olivia's points were scored before she came to Iona, Juana has played her entire career with the Gaels. Team has been sparked by the recent play, off the bench, by Thoranna Hodge-Carr, who is from Iceland. And I must apologize to her, because whenever I hear her name, I think Hodge-Podge. The team's center is Ketsia Athias, who in Thursday's home win over Canisius had 24 points and 15 boards. Unfortunately, she was injured in yesterday's game, and at the end of the game she was seen walking/hobbling off, using a crutch. So. I hope she'll be okay by Thursday. No doubt, the team is trending upward.

Athias an interesting story. Was previously a division 2 athlete. And in an instant dividend from the Concordia acquisition came to Iona for the nursing program. Wasn't really looking for division 1.
Not sure what happened, but Women's team played wonderfully these last 2 days. Winning easily yesterday and sticking with a bigger, more talented Fairfield team for 36 minutes today. Finally found their shooting touch. Thought they might even pull off the upset for a bit today. Best news is that Camilion is coming back for her graduate year. Tremendous player. Should be a better team next year.
While it's not Iona BB it is Iona related. Just watched two fantastic Women's BB games. Tony B's SH team just defeated Columbia , on the road in the WNIT, 78-75, with Columbia missing tying three at the buzzer. Lauren De Falco seems to be his lead assistant, as she was the one instructing the team in their final TO. Also, SH has a PG listed at 5'6, but the announcers said she was closer to 5'4. Looked about 5'2 to me. But in the dame she was 14-14 from the foul line, with most of the shots NBN.
And in an Elite Eight NCAA game for a spot in the Final Four, UCONN defeated NC State in double OT. Paige Bueckers was held to four points in the first half, and 12 points in regulation, exploded in OT with about 17 points, shooting 6-6 from the line, while only missing on one FG attempt. At the end of the first OT, NC State hit a Joebird special, well almost, by hitting a tying three with 0.03 on the clock.

A great DH.
Great game for Seton Hall. Yes, Lauren is the top assistant. You are correct about Lauren Park-Lane. Even 5'2" may be generous. Great player had a great night. Also a great atmosphere at Columbia gym. I believe they play Thursday night in Nashville against Middle Tennessee.
Congratulations once again to Tony and the Pirates! Topsy turvy game. Pirates gave up a 22 point lead and then again a 7 point lead late. Middle Tennessee took a 4 point lead with 25 seconds left and somehow the Pirates pulled it out. Looks like they will either be playing at South Dakota State or at UCLA in the final.
