Off the coast of Columbia. Not sure if it is in international waters or not, or who first found it. This Spanish Galleon, laden with gold and most likely silver from mines in Peru and Columbia was sent to the bottom by a British warship in 1708. The Brits sunk her as a hostile ship during the War of the Spanish Succession. At that time, the Brits tactical approach when fighting naval battles was to blast holes in your hull and send you to the bottom. The French on the other hand would rather rake your standing and running rigging, making you disabled in the water, board you and fight you on deck with the hope of taking and preserving the ship for their own use. The Brits didn't need your crappy ship, they made tons of their own high quality vessels. The French method would have worked better here, as this ship went to the bottom with what today is estimated to be $17 billion in gold and silver. The Columbian navy found her. Who knew Colombia has a navy? www.cbsnews.com/news/san-jose-shipwreck-colombia-new-video-treasure-2-new-shipwrecks/
