Just got the sad news that my friend Peter Gibson passed away last night. He was a loyal alum (Class of '51) and fan of Iona. Peter served on the Alumni Board for a long time, and after leaving the Board, he continued serving Iona's alums as a member of the Internal Affairs Committee. I might be exaggerating when I say that he never missed a meeting, even though he lived out in Syosset, NY. But, I know I'm not exaggerating when I say that Peter, along with Nofi Vaccaro, were two of our most'positive' fans who always saw the glass as half full. He served with the US Army in Korea during some horrific battles. He played BB at and graduated from Rice HS. I can also attest to the fact that he possessed a very nice set shot. After Iona he earned an MBA from NYU. And for a great many years, he was the owner of Long Island Catholic Supply store (Religious goods) at Roosevelt Field on LI. He leaves behind two loving daughters, Laura and Lynn. He will be missed by all who knew him.
May he RIP.

Pete was a great son of Iona and an extremely loyal basketball fan. Always there when Iona the Iona Alumni Board needed him. He will be missed. Always had a smile on his face. They don’t make them like Pete Gibson anymore. May he rest in the loving arms of our Lord forever. Certa Bonum Certamen.

I always like it when one "Smiling Irishman recognizes another". Our school is lucky to have you both.

ic59, often times I don't connect the name to the face. When you mentioned the Catholic Supply store, I then knew exactly who Peter Gibson was. I had many, many conversations with Peter over a number of years. Like you, he would often stop by for a pregame chat with epatrick and I. A passionate Gael fan and nice person. Very sorry to hear of his loss. May he rest in peace.

If anyone wants to see the Mass, Google St. Edward's Church, Syosset, NY (Aka St. Edward the Confessor). Scroll down to Watch and click on the schedule. They show a funeral mass for Saturday, November 12th.

The funeral mass was very well attended, especially when you consider that at his advanced years, so many of his friends had predeceased him. In their Eulogy of Uncle Leo, both his niece and nephew, started by talking of his love for Iona. I believe it was his nephew, Rob Connelly, who said many schools have loyal supporters, but that none was more loyal than his uncle. Rob was a former Captain of the Yale BB team, loved talking hoops with his uncle.
Peter's connection to Iona lives on, as he was instrumental in bringing the Celtic Cross statue to Iona. It now sits as part of the Murphy Green. And if Peter were still alive, he would have called me, yesterday and told me why it was good that we lost to Hofstra, as it will keep the kids from being overconfident. May he RIP.
