One of the last two Brothers, along with Br. Cousins, that I really knew at Iona. Just a great down to earth guy, who was loved by a great number of Iona people. He was also a former president of the Iona Alumni Board. From speaking to him, you would never know that he was a brilliant scientist, as he came across as just a regular guy. Also, a proud supporter of Iona Rowing. RIP, Brother, you will be missed.

I am sitting here shocked. As I have mentioned before, I transferred to Iona in my sophomore year because I thought I might have a vocation to be a brother. Bob was a couple of years ahead of me, he had completed his novitiate year in West Park, NY and was back at the college. He was always there to be of assistance and give wise counsel to those junior to him. It was also evident that he was brilliant. I last saw him when I was at a home game against Siena in 2005. I was in the chapel after the game and Br. Dunkak invited me to join the monks for mass and dinner. I had a chance to speak with Bob, but it was Br. Dunkak who sang Bob's praises about his work at The Goddard Space Center and the Mars mission. He touched a lot of lives and will be missed.
Eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord. And may Perpetual Light shine upon him.

Very sad news. He was a brilliant scientist and a better man.

Just returned from Br. Novak's funeral mass at Holy Family. It was pretty well attended but few that I knew. About two dozen brothers were in attendance, with most probably retired. I recognized Br. Cousins and Br. Devlin.
Was most impressed by the Iona Bagpipes and the Crew Team Honor Guard. Eight CT members, holding their 'giant oars' lined up outside the church, four on each side, and Brother's body was carried into the church through the Honor Guard. Very impressive. Noticed many people drying their eyes throughout the Mass.
A very nice and well deserved sendoff for Brother Bob.

59, thank you for your post and for attending Bob's funeral.
Bro. Cussen (affectionately called by his students "Hermano" Cussen) has been at Iona as a Spanish professor for about 50 years now - a really good guy.

59, he's ALWAYS looked young. When I last saw him (the same evening that I last saw Bob) I couldn't believe how young he looked. As tall as he is I have to believe he played some hoops in his younger days. I usually see him in the stands (close to the scorer's table) when I watch the home games on line.

Brother Novak has been a staple of our program for 42 of our 76 year history and certainly a fixture in my life these past 22 years. We're still processing the loss but he will be sorely missed.
