Created this thread for speculation about Coach Pitino and his status. Feel free to post stuff here, so this discussion doesn't inject itself into every game, ranking thread. If Guy thinks this is a bad idea, I assume he'll just shut it down.

I would prefer the ongoing and invevitable speculation about Pitino didn't intrude upon every thread on the main board. Maybe people can vote on whether this thread is a good idea. Then we would have a consensus on this topic.

My vote would be to have one catch all thread on Coach Pitino, but it should live on the main Iona Basketball section not off topic section.

Personally, I think the speculation on Coach is as much of a circle jerk as is the early season speculation on NCAA 12 seed, as an example. But, if members want to enjoy a circle jerk; have at it. I agree with bill that it needs to be discreet and out of the mainstream.

Should there also be a thread off topic of why NJJ plays the high post ra5her than the low post which also questions Coach Pitino? π It also appears throughout multiple threads on the main board.

Thank you. I've been biting my tongue on this. Nelly thinks he is a David Laurey, while his skill set indicates that he strive to be Jordan Washington - offensive fouls included. When have we seen Nelly called for an offensive fouls?

JMO, but doesn't Nelly play where he's told to play? He plays away from the basket because that's the offense that we're running. I guess it's possible that RP is trying to expand his game for a possible pro career.

I guess it's possible that RP is trying to expand his game for a possible pro career. 59, I'm glad you are not the coach. Same for me! Same for 70! I am a fan of Iona basketball - not Kentucky, not Lousiville, not Gonzaga. So, I am going to exercise my fan prerogative while enjoying the clarity of life on the ledge. Why would you run an offense that puts your star player in a position to fail? In yesterday's presser, Coach said Nelly has yet to learn to pass out of the post. Nelly, literally, has brain freeze in the high post offense. The offense you suggest runs pretty well with Oz away from the basket because he looks for cutters and he passes well out of the high post. I think with lots of work in practice Nelly will get there. Right now, I am more interested in Iona winning games than I am in a possible pro career. By the way, the latter usually flows from the former. Maybe it's time for Coach to close the book on Kentucky and Louisville. There, you are refining the skillset of 4 and 5 star players. At Iona, you are adding to the skillset of 3 and 4 star recruits - teaching young dogs new tricks. Some players will learn faster than others - Walter Clayton Jr. Maybe we need to live with the Ibine Ayo, and others, mistakes on the floor just as we have been living with Nelly's. With Quinn out, maybe we are a month or even a year away from resolving the critical mass of so many learning curves. [ Finally, I want to thank Iona for the wisdom in selecting a HOF coach to replace Tim Cluess. They are awfully big shoes to fill. ]

SLG, you're probably correct. But maybe RP thinks that Nelly can improve his play (away from the basket) as the season goes on. I don't think he can but as you pointed out, you're happy that I'm not the coach.
P.S. Don't take it personally but I have forwarded your assessment of my coaching skills to my friends at AARP. Probably a coincidence but twenty years ago you never questioned my coaching decisions.

I watched this game the other night, and I think I saw Nelly in an Oregon uniform going by the name, Dante.
