If Fanta's report is correct, then good riddance. The man just looked in the camera at the presser and completely lied for 5 minutes.
Feel for the players who deserve better

He added: “This is a great job, we can make this into something really, really special…Great place, I’m really happy, I hope I can get 1,000 here. God willing, I hope I can live long enough to see that.”
Pitino's words after he won his 800th game..

Lol. He actually made comments at the presser that got you thinking he was still considering to return to Iona

I mean you can look back at a ton of quotes from him over his first two seasons and see now they’re all BS. When he first got hired, he repeatedly said “my career will end here”. He’s said BS like this his whole career. Can’t take anything he says seriously imo. Thanks for 3 solid seasons I guess but he didn’t do anything the GREAT Tim Cluess couldn’t do. He keeps saying he changed the culture but he didn’t. There’s a history of winning culture at Iona and there will continue to be when he’s gone. I just want to win a freaking tournament game. Tired of seeing all these other teams do it and not us.

Feel for the players who deserve better To be fair to RP, Fanta’s report simply tells us what SJ’s intends to do. It doesn’t say anything about what RP intends to do. Fanta is a paid shill for the Big East. Why this article couldn’t wait until tomorrow I don’t know, but I guess it is because the BE is in new contract negotiations with Fox and SJ’s has terribly underperformed in the largest media market in the conference. The league is exerting pressure on SJ’s I believe to hire RP as that presumably would help with the negotiations. A weak NY team isn’t good for TV and the league presidents want as much money as they can get from Fox. Fox of course wants eyeballs for the games they air. I’m assuming here Georgetown has passed on RP. So I guess Fanta is trying to get this narrative out there before RP considers a school in a higher level conference. Personally I would hate to see him go to SJ’s but I hope he makes up his mind fairly soon. I realize as along time fan and supporter of the program my wishes mean absolutely zero to all the players involved in this drama, RP and the administration at Iona.

Fair point, but I don't believe for a second there hasn't been any discussions between Pitino(agent) and SJU

Home from Albany, amazing first half, terrible second half. Pretty sick of always losing in the ncaa tourney, and for the last decade always losing by double digits, even when we have great first halves.
Some other thoughts:
How did we earn the right to play the best team in the tourney in the first round, do we ever get a good match up? Mississippi was the only time I remember a good one.
We may have lost our chance at Tobin Anderson tonight
Everything I hear says Pitino is gone but then he gives nuggets that make you think maybe he’ll stay, I doubt but let’s find out soon, I’m sick of this! The worst part will be losing our players. We have a possible top 25 team next year, just need to add some bulk, but if he leaves the roster will be vastly different.
I dislike Pitino if he goes, I despise him if he goes to St. Chicken. But boy it would boost Iona’s program if he ever signs lifetime contract and says this is where he wants to be. Probably a pipe dream.
Don’t be surprised if Pitino goes to Providence instead of st. Chicken if Cooley leaves.
Nice game to end his career to one of my favorite Gaels of all time - BJL!
If Pitino leaves he fails to reach the level of his predecessor, Tim Cluess the goat of Iona coaches.
Truly believe Jim Valvano sold Iona’s soul to get the Louisville win. The deal was Iona will have much success but never win a big late season up game again (ncaa).
Hope no suckers listened to the have to park in SUNY Albany tonight. People waiting for busses and couldn’t find them. I was in an out immediately a half mile away in a parking garage.

Pitino is free to do whatever he chooses, but it would be highly disappointing to see him leave Iona for an inferior program like SJU after the chance we gave him.
The honorable thing to do would be to respect his commitment and stay true to his word, stay five years and hand the program over to fresh blood after he has put us in a better position than what he inherited. If he leaves right now he would basically be running in place from Cluess and he would be leaving the program in disarray, much worse than when he took over. That is not what this deal was all about IMO.
If he leaves, Anderson and Grasso should be the only names on the list and let’s keep this train rolling.

dailygazette.com/2023/03/17/a-seat-in-the-bleachers-with-ionas-season-over-the-pitino-job-watch-begins-in-earnest/He may be grateful to Iona for giving him a chance and appreciative of what he calls “the culture” there that put him in position to win.
He also pointed to the talent deficiency in the frontcourt that was largely responsible for the Gaels struggling against a big-time program in an NCAA tournament game, as Iona did against Connecticut."
“The past, it’s always cherished,” he said “We learn from it. We cherish the past. I’ve been to seven Finals Fours, two championships, and I cherish them. I also learn from the mistakes that were made.
“The present is where we’re at right now, and it’s disappointing for my guys, because they’re a great group of guys.
“And the future, I really have no idea what the future may bring, because I’ve got to look at the grand scheme of things, about winning, and winning is very important …”

Would I hate it if he's hired? Not at all. But shouldn't just be considered frontrunner. Anderson obviously is the hot name, but you do realize you want him to do what you're knocking Pitino for? He would be bailing on FDU after 1 year. Have to call Kimani Young. Very good chance his staff could be Johns, Brown and Stanley. Iona will draw lots of strong candidates. We were spoiled by Cluess and him not looking to leave. Though he did eventually try to leave at one point.

Presser. Make of it what you want. Would be a terrible look if reports are true
