Yep. 87 years old. Great guy. In my opinion got the Iona program back pointed in the right direction.

Yep. 87 years old. Great guy. In my opinion got the Iona program back pointed in the right direction. With a big assist from his son. Good guy, but even if he gets to the HOF, not banner-worthy. |

The contacts that he has made, while working at Duke, has to help. A great guy, imo.

I thought the main problem he had as a coach was his failure to defend the 3, and his lack of emphasis on shooting the 3. He coached as if there was no 3 point line because that was what he was use to, and that was how he won at Potsdam. However, without him we never would have had Tim Welsh, who really was the one who turned the program around.

Jerry Welsh was a great guy, but did not perform as HC of Iona. I don’t believe he ever made it to a MAAC final and he had losing seasons in all but one of his years at Iona. He did a very good job opening up a recruiting pipeline overseas, and various players such as Mikkel Larsen and Timinskas came to Iona while he was the coach. However on the floor his teams were mediocre at best. There were some great atmospheres at the Mulcahy Center back in those days though. Great memories.

The knock on him was his inability to recruit local D1 talent from the CHSAA, PSAL and AAU ranks. His son Tim changed that in a big way. |
