In today's Knicks game, Hubie compared Jalen Brunson's stats with Richie Guerin's in Knick history. Said that Guerin was "a center at Iona."
Hubie is a long time expert on college/pro BB, but like most of us he's showing his age. Wally McCarvill was the center when RG played for Iona. Jim McDermott often referred to John McIvor as the other guard who played in the backcourt with RG. Bob Santini, a year older, was a 6'5 forward, and while I'm not sure I believe that 6'6 LeRoy Scott played with him, along with 6'8 Ed Lisepech (Sp?).
Bottom line Richie Guerin did not play center, even if he did post up opponents at times.

05, they were very good, but Iona BB was at a lower level back then. Consider" * Home games were played at O'Connell gym. Although, we usually had a game or two in the Garden. * Before RG, the Knicks had drafted Bob Santini. John McIvor is in the Iona HOF. * Wally McCarvill, at 6'7 or 6'8 was a pretty good big man, and while he wasn't as good as expected, LeRoy Scott was a star at New Rochelle HS. * Gene 'Red' Roberti was probably our best 'early' PG, but he might have graduated a year before RG started. Also, possible he played with RG. * And the coach, Jim McDermott, was known mostly for coaching Dick McGuire (Knicks) in HS, when he first started at Iona. And later on, he was identified as the backcourt mate of John Wooden, when they they played in the Navy during WWII. * Even then, top foes were Fordham and Manhattan. * Major BB accomplishment was making and playing well in the NCIT, out in Denver.
