You sure? Article says on this day in 1981, which would have been the 80-81 season. This day in December of 1981. Oh yeah. That game was the following season. A much better season. Thanks.

Did we have a strong team that season? Seemed like it was a transition year. Correct. 15-14, Middle of the pack. Believe LIU went to the NCAA tournament that year. Last year in the ECAC. Just to avoid the confusion I see coming up here. Greg/59 are talking about a game in Kennedy's first year, 1980-81. A year before the first MAAC year. The Northeastern game was in December, 1981, Kennedy's second year.

We easily dispatched Calhoun's other Huskies team at the Hartford Civic Center a few years later. Of course this was before the UCONN Huskies became an elite college basketball team.

They were still pretty good. Dee Rowe (I believe) was the coach and considered a VG coach. We had Hargraves, Grimes, Coleman, Truesdale, but I think that Gary and Steve were gone, but not sure.

We won by one, and yes Burtt and Springer gone. This was the Iona team that started 17-1 and was in the USA Today top 25 in February.

Pretty sure Calhoun was coaching UConn when we beat them Dominic Perno was HC. Calhoun came in 1986. UConn was the worst team in the Big East in 84-85, the year the Gaels beat them.

Couple of things I remember about the tourney. We stayed in the hotel connected to the arena, and only had to take an elevator and walk into the arena (Hartford Civic Center?). During the time/day between the games we went on a tour of the city. Two things I still remember, and one was the Hartford cemetery with graves going back to the 1700's. And in those cases (1700's) it seemed that a lot of people died in the month of April. Of course that is just my opinion, and I'll conclude that people got sick during the winter months and lingered before dying in April. I say that w/o an ounce of scientific evidence.
The other thing I remembered was visiting the home of Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain. Always associated SC with the mid-west and the Mississippi River. Now, I wouldn't be at all surprised if other posters made corrections to my recollections.

Very old cemetery in Hartford, which was named after Hertford, England, which the English pronounce “Hartford.” Like they pronounce clerk “clark” and derby “darby.” Clemens lived many years in Hartford and his house is still a museum and tourist attraction.

That was Pat Kennedy’s first season as HC of Iona. I am pretty sure we lost in the finals of the ECAC that year, but perhaps others will be able to confirm? How did that season go? If Valvano hadn’t left, I believe it would have been Jimmy V as the coach with Ruland, Burtt, Springer and Grimes all playing together. 😱 This was Kennedy's second season 81-82. Lost ECAC championship to LIU at Nassau Coliseum in March 1981. Stevie "one punch" Burtt was ejected, and team folded after a comfortable first half lead.
