Tim Cluess was innovative in how he made a mid major into a regular power, I’m hoping Tobin Anderson can do the same for the current times. Currently he is recruiting several freshmen who seem like they should go higher but aren’t getting the offers they would have 5 years ago due to an abundance of extra year Covid players and the portal. I think this is good for a player or two, but the danger here is if they do well they are likely to get poached, they are probably less likely to get offers if they are undersized. I think in todays game mid major coaches need to recruit a mixture of the following: 1. Under recruited freshmen, best case are Freshmen who are undersized- less likely to get poached. 2. Under recruited Jucos. I think there are opportunities here too because of the new rules, and I think they are less likely to leave after 1 year, especially if they are also under sized. 3. graduate transfers- have to always bring in at least 2 who can start, it’s only one year but they can’t be poached. 4. International player or two- probably are some studs available here that are under recruited due to the new rules. 5. D2 studs ready to transfer up 6. A low major or two who we can poach. The goal here is to get players who are at the high end of the Maac level and are less likely to leave, but at the same time have not too many newcomers at once. Now there is a second part of recruiting that Tim Cluess didn’t have to deal with: Keeping the players you have. The biggest problem here is money, but it seems Iona has decent resources for our level. Tobin seems to think with our decent resources and by creating a family atmosphere, he can keep the young players. I’m not sure that is going to work for the better players, but hoping with a mixture of players from above we can keep having a high end Maac team each year. I do not envy today’s coaches, they have a very difficult job! Any other thoughts on what our coach needs to do to keep Iona a successful mid major. Interesting topic for a thread and well thought out post. Thanks.

In a perfect world JB's strategy would be the way to go. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. It reminds me of Mike Tyson saying that when it comes to fighting everyone has a strategy, until they get hit in the mouth. My strategy, when it comes to recruiting, is more basic.
Hire a good/successful coach and let him do his 'thing'.

The billionaire Vitamin Water guy has made a seven figure pledge to St Chickens NIL collective... nypost.com/2024/02/22/sports/st-johns-receiving-nil-lifeline-from-billionaire-alum-mike-repole/NIL has quickly turned college hoops into a big dick contest between billionaires and millionaires. Right now, the players are professionals and for the most part will go to whoever offers the most $$$ (who could blame them? - we'd all do the same). I don't begrudge the players earning a share of the pie, but the NCAA needs to institute some equitable guidelines that prevent the elimination of low and mid-major basketball conferences. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what those might be. Maybe some type of cap (and floor) for each D1 sport? I'm not a lawyer and wouldn't even pretend to know all the potential ramifications involved in setting guidelines, but a serious strategy needs to be developed for preserving low and mid-major college basketball.

I would like to see us recruit some height. I get to play this system you need to run but in the MAAC having a viable big is a game changer. Height and length need to be sought after. Even an athletic 6'9 wing with a long wingspan would go a long way. I like our guards but it feels like a bit of a log jam, at least pre GG leaving.

Langston Wilson fit that profile, playing pretty good with Milwaukee

The three kids we have signed to NILs look good. However, we need to hit a home run or two in the transfer portal. Especially some athletes with height.

Forgot who posted it preseason, but they warned all of these grad transfers were never THE guy at previous program nor really won much Wow, were they spot on. Really liked the way Adewale is playing since getting more run. JQ all rookie. Aranguren likely played his way off rookie team, but will be very good. Bates and Saunders showed flashes. Wallace, Menard and Hogarth are all having very good senior seasons. Unless a grad transfer in the portal fills a specific need and comes from a winning program, I prefer another FR and JUCO kids. One bright spot, don't have to worry about any kids getting poached
