Tim Cluess was innovative in how he made a mid major into a regular power, I’m hoping Tobin Anderson can do the same for the current times. Currently he is recruiting several freshmen who seem like they should go higher but aren’t getting the offers they would have 5 years ago due to an abundance of extra year Covid players and the portal. I think this is good for a player or two, but the danger here is if they do well they are likely to get poached, they are probably less likely to get offers if they are undersized.
I think in todays game mid major coaches need to recruit a mixture of the following: 1. Under recruited freshmen, best case are Freshmen who are undersized- less likely to get poached. 2. Under recruited Jucos. I think there are opportunities here too because of the new rules, and I think they are less likely to leave after 1 year, especially if they are also under sized. 3. graduate transfers- have to always bring in at least 2 who can start, it’s only one year but they can’t be poached. 4. International player or two- probably are some studs available here that are under recruited due to the new rules. 5. D2 studs ready to transfer up 6. A low major or two who we can poach.
The goal here is to get players who are at the high end of the Maac level and are less likely to leave, but at the same time have not too many newcomers at once.
Now there is a second part of recruiting that Tim Cluess didn’t have to deal with: Keeping the players you have. The biggest problem here is money, but it seems Iona has decent resources for our level. Tobin seems to think with our decent resources and by creating a family atmosphere, he can keep the young players. I’m not sure that is going to work for the better players, but hoping with a mixture of players from above we can keep having a high end Maac team each year. I do not envy today’s coaches, they have a very difficult job!
Any other thoughts on what our coach needs to do to keep Iona a successful mid major.

So your plan is get 5th yr seniors because they can't get poached over good frosh because they might get taken?
There are already discussions happening re utilizing NIL to keep the players we have, first and foremost.
Heard some details last night. Plan for the upcoming offseason is solid. No guarantees, but we'll do what is realistic.
This is one of the more interesting/complicated topics. Def deserves it's own thread. Glad Iona is trying to get ahead of the game, but as NIL evolves who the hell knows what will happen.

Wow.. that's your take away? Did you even read what he wrote or did you see a few words and have to make an ass remark?

Items 1 and 2 mention “undersized”. I feel we need more size and more interior bigs. In looking at the current roster we have 3 bigs (Panzo, Oz, and Sultan) and all three play away from the basket.

I would get the bigs from the graduate transfers. Yes we need more size then we have but I think maybe Quigley and gordan don’t get poached because they are undersized, if they are a talented frosh, win freshmen of the year and have no downsize I don’t see how we keep them for 4 years.

I think we recruit the best players available that fit Tobin's system. Can't worry about players being poached. In my opinion you can't base your recruiting strategy thinking the player is too good and will eventually leave. I want players here that are that good and I'll rely on Tobin and his staff to convince them to stay. If they don't, so be it bring in the next stud!
I think that when prospective recruits visit the campus that they should be given a basketball and sent to the free throw line to take 50 shots. If they don't make at least 35 of them, thank them for coming and wish them well in their recruitment..

Wow. This is a tough one. On the one hand, I'd like to say I wholeheartedly agree with you -- might even argue that 70% when you are just shooting around is not high enough; it's not the same as doing it during a game (more pressure; you are tired, etc). On the other hand, how to you pass on a guy like Gordon with his athleticism and all the other things he excels at, including keying the press?
