Today, we received some sad news about the passing of Ronnie Weintraub, a true Manhattan and SPU Super Fan and stats master. It seems he had been battling health issues for some time. Ronnie was not only a dedicated sports fan but also a Special Olympian who proudly wore his medals as part of his sports attire. If 25% of the Iona alumni showed the same degree of loyalty, commitment, and zealous support that Ronnie showed, our program would be swimming in cash, and we'd be in need of constructing a 7,000-seat arena! I loved seeing Ronnie at games and I always admired Ronnie's commitment, especially when I'd spot him at games diligently working on his stats sheets. He stood by Manhattan for over 25 years until he felt let down by Steve Masiello's decision to accept the South Florida. Apparently Masiello had told Ronnie he was not leaving Manhattan and when the news broke, Ronnie felt betrayed. Ronnie publicly called out Masiello for going back on his word, leading him to switch his allegiance to SPU. Despite the twists and turns of life and Ronnies health struggles, Ronnie's passion for the game never wavered. His story is one I doubt we'll witness replicated in our lifetime. May he rest in peace. Jaden did a great tribute to him: dalydoseofhoops.blogspot.com/2024/02/ronnies-love-for-life-is-his-greatest.html

Nothing I could say would sum it up better than Jaden's tribute. Extremely well said and may Ronnie rest in peace.

Absolutely. The Ronnie’s of this world are here to make us better people… well, at least that is for most people.

I could not stand Steve Masiello when he first became the HC of Manhattan. I thought he was arrogant, phony and insincere. Then a few years later I remember going to the MAAC Tournament, can’t remember if it was in Springfield or Albany. With nobody watching (except me incognito), Masiello was so gentle, sensitive and kind to Ronnie, going above and beyond to treat him like he was part of the family. That changed my opinion of Masiello for good.
Ronnie was a real legend on the NY hoops circuit and will be dearly missed.
RIP.
