Slowly but surely Monroe is building a campus of sorts in the East End business district of New Rochelle....Their excutives seem to know what they are doing.......Thwarted in effort to obtain and renovate the old Armory building by groups that seem to want it to rot away, they took action..... They signed a three year lease with the New Rochelle Mall management to take over the Ice Skating rink and convert it into a Basketball Arena...It will be renovated to seat 1,500 fans.....It is just across the street from their main buildings...Smart move as they have been playing their home games in various metro locations....Already a very good Jr. college basketball program, this move might very will move them up to one of the best in the country....
Wish them luck..As they will be playing here immediately, I intend to stop in and take a look................Just might spot another Voekel. ;D ;D
Go Gaels!!!!!

According to their web site, they are playing games even as they are renovating. If you go will see pictures of the Milwaukee University court Monroe purchased (they are scheduled to re-paint it during the summer). You also still see the dasher boards and the hockey player logos on the walls. www.monroecollegemustangs.com/index.aspx?tab=mensbasketball&path=mbballIt makes me sad to see the basketball court in the place of the old hockey rink. Ah yes, I am longing for the days of the Ice Gaels. wshile I do miss the team and everyone connected with it, I sure do not miss those "adventurous" bus rides via Coach USA.

Thanks guys...looks like it will be a very convienent and nice place for them....If I had known I would have stopped over, as I intend to take a look at Orlando Sanchez their 6/9 freshman who I have heard very, very good things about....Been told that he is comer, a good rebounder, plays defense and shoots the three.....He played with Dominican Republic under 21 team...I feel pretty sure the word is out......
Go Gaels!!!!!

Orlando leads the country in blocked shots, is fourth in rebounding and is averaging 7.5 ppg.
He is athletic....I will take him at 6'9" just to clear the boards.

Iona 85....If all goes well, I intend to go to their game with Westchester C.C. this Sat. at 3 PM in the Mall.....If so will give a for what it is worth a Oldtimer's view.......
As Cjb states he is not a good foul shooter, but I noticed out of the aprox. 250 rebounds, about 100 of them are on the offensive boards..That is a high and out of proportion number.......
Will keep a eye open to see if any of our staff attend......
Go Gaels!!!!!

Just back from watching the Monroe-Westcheser Jr. college first ever game at their new Athletic Center..Met a friend and had dinner after....Nice place to watch basketball, and as soon as it is expanded it will be even better.......Monroe won 68-64 in a game that never had more then a 5 point score spread. It was pretty good basketball, and IMO Monore could win games in bottom Div. 1 conferences.
Now to Orlander Sanchez.....For 3 quarters he gave a good but not overly great impression..He played under control and was willing to grab rebounds and set picks for driving guards.....In the final 10 minutes he turned up the heat and was by far the most dominating player on the court as he suddenly took control.....He scored about a dozen points in that period and carried Monroe to victory.....He is a crowd favorite as with each of his baskets the announcer led them in a "Big "O" cheer..I did not keep score, but about 17 and 10 is close....
He is very athletic, a good ball handler and passer....He is not a power rebounder but is able to keep jumping several times on one rebound, and on a few occasions tapped it out to a guard.....Also....Down the stretch in the last few minutes, he made all is foul shots.....If you asked me to compare, I would say he had a little bit of Courtney Fields in him......
We are probably filled up next year, but if Sanchez a freshman is still available for 2012. IMO (If any body cares) he would be coming to Iona....
Go Gaels!!!!!!
