Did anyone see the SJU-Rutgers game? And if not ESPN will be all over it on their various shows. In a nutshell Larry, Moe and Curley, aka as Burr, Higgins and Walton, made more mistakes in the last 30 seconds of the game that one would have thought possible, ending with the refs walking off the court with 1.7 seconds remaining. They missed two tecnicals against SJU: 1. Lavin was 30 feet out of the coaches box (almost to mid-court) while the game was still going on. Hope Mitch Bouogoro was watching. 2. Brownlee of SJU tossed the ball into the stands, which should have called for a delay of game penalty.
What does this have to do with Iona? The BE has apologized to Rutgers, and they'll probably throw them a bone and invite them to the NIT.

ic59, one thing you forgot to mention - before Brownlee threw the ball into the stands, he clearly stepped out of bounds with 1.7 seconds left and a referee standing on that sideline with a clear view. It was only after he stepped out that he threw ball in stands. Proper call would have been a stoppage of the clock and turnover to Rutgers with 1.7 left on clock and then a subsequent dead ball technical against St. Chicken for throwing the ball in stands. Rutgers should have shot technical fouls and then inbounded the ball. Does the name Tim Higgins ring a bell?

Mr. Doom, I agree with you. But I like the way that everyone is ignoring Steve Lavin who was almost to mid-court when Brownlee walked/stepped out of bounds with 1.7 left on the clock. I think that Higgins saw Lavin at mid-court, Burr running off the court and thought that the game was over. Everyone seems to be looking at the refs and Brownlee and I guess, rightfully so, but NO ONE is even mentioning Lavin's infraction. And we ALL KNOW what happened to FF back in the nineties.

Francesa, as big a St. Chicken fan as they come, was fight to be tied at the hosing Rutgers got. I don't know what worse, the way he was ranting yesterday or the way I was ranting Monday night ;D As for Mr. Higgins, my friend and I used to bang our heads against the wall whenever we heard his name at Mulcahy. Someone has to explain why officials can go looking phantom elbow-throws (did it twice in the Peacocks-Gaels game and at least once at the end of the Hall-Rutgers game), but can't go to the replay in this case. Then again, I guess the officials would have to make "a call" in order to see if they got it right. It will be interesting to see if one of the "C" Tourneys gives Rutgers a shot since it would give the Tournament some publicity.

Figures it would involve Timmy Higgins. Referee Higgins has been an Iona-killer for many years. He refereed our NCAA game vs. Virginia and hosed us (he called about 75% of that game, mostly against Iona). Funny too because Timmy is friends with a number of Iona alums and Iona fans and I believe he lived at one time in New Rochelle in the Pelhamdale Apartments where JB Buono lived for many years. He and Jimmy Burr (one of the the other referees yesterday, both need to retire.

Agree 100% about Higgins, he's been consistently blowing calls since I was in junior high, and he seemed to go against Iona most of the time. I was at the Virginia game and he made some horrendous calls against us that day. What made it worse is he always seems to make the bad calls in an especially obnoxious way, like he enjoyed making horrible calls.

One reason why I like Tim Higgins, though I'm not defending his work, yesterday, was that he always supported the Iona HOF golf outing. He would play golf but NEVER stay around for the cocktail party or dinner. Don't know if he still does.

Ya that was a brutal display. I think Francessa said it looked like the refs stopped reffing with 4 mins to go in the game, hate to say it but I agree with tank. I only saw the last 8 mins of that game and I know that Big East play is rough and hardnosed, but their were a ton of no calls on both sides. I think a few travelling calls were missed also, not only Brownlee's.
In the SJU/Cuse game today, DJ Kennedy went down early with a knee injury. Not good. They looked exsausted at the end with the 3 starters playing close to 40 mins. They gotta heal up and rest to make a run
Also, Mookie Jones another DNP
