Congratulations to Santa Clara on their win over Iona last night in the CIT Championship Game.
Truthfully, I felt we were getting pushed around most of the game. We were outhustled on the boards and the rebounding numbers show that. Watching it on TV, it appeared that there was a lot of "over the back" stuff going on that the referees swallowed their whistles on ... and the Santa Clara guards were hand-checking the entire game (again, no whistles).
This takes nothing away from Santa Clara who came in, ready to take the Championship from us on our home floor. You could see how they beat Gonzaga in their league this year.
This year's Iona team had a great deal of trouble when facing teams who muscled and outhustled us (the exceptions might be the Syracuse and Richmond games) --- the losses vs. Vermont early in the season, the loss vs. St. Peter's in the MAAC Championship and last night vs. Santa Clara showed that. Let's hope we can find a couple of "bigs" who can help us out in that area next year. We need a couple of monsters who will take a lot of pressure off Michael Glover. That will free up our guards for even more "3's" as well.
All in all, it was a great season for Iona and a terrific inaugural season for Coach Cluess at Iona. Now let's BUILD on that success and fill the holes. Next year could (and should) be a very special year for the Iona Gaels. Preparation for next season starts TODAY.
How about a trip to Europe or Australia this summer to keep the troops sharp? Not sure what the rule is on that (something like every 4 years I believe).
GO GAELS!
