I'm extremely happy with the local pickup. When was the last time we had a player from Rice? Just-in-time Marshall? This kid has wingspan and I predict he'll be our version of Sam Bowie by the time he graduates. He WILL contribute. Hopefully he's still growing Agree Hoopy. He looks good to me. So he needs to develop his body a bit. Isn't the first kid who's had to do that.

Wow! He went from 6'9'' 190 to 6'10'' 220 in one day. Imagine how big he'll be in November! By Nov. he ought to be 8'2" 450.

The worst part of the signing is that he has tweeted that the coaches have told him that he's play as a freshman, since it seems that he'd be a VG red shirt candidate. As for his size, imo, he'll weigh 230 by the time he's a sophomore, which is why I think he shouldn't play as a freshman. Strength will come in time, but I don't know about the skills part. I'd be very surprised if he contributed anything as a frosh. Hope I'm wrong. Who knows maybe he's friends with former Rice player, Mo Mo Jones, who is looking to transfer back home from Arizona.

There is no worst part of this signing. We're getting a freshman not a transfer. Looks like a good student/athlete.

From what I've read it appears he made a lot of progress from his Jr. to Sr. year in HS. I personally like the idea of red-shirting him but I'll defer to the coaching staff to determine if he can provide productive minutes next year.
I agree with Hoops and CT, this is a good signing...a Big from Rice...he looked pretty good in the link provided in Page 1.

The young man's words are totally unambiguous ("they said I’m going to come in and play as a freshman."). I don't see any room for a misunderstanding about his status as a freshman. If, in fact, there has been some miscommunication the coaches had better address it now rather than possibly face another disenchanted big (AKA Pelch) down the road. Short of that, I can only assume that the staff has no intention of going the red-shirt route.

I like the signing. Gomez is going to have to earn his minutes and over time deliver results. I’m not sure a lot will be expected from him next year but maybe he will surprise.
Regarding Pelch he had his minutes this year to show results and other that a few instances his successes were few and far between. A lot of Iona’s substitute players this past season when they got their opportunity for playing time were trying to do too much and in the end did not accomplish enough. With Pelch while he has the size he’s needs a lot of work with reflexes, foot work and court sense to develop further. Hopefully he’ll get it when he moves on and matures.

Yeah, he's got to hit the weights. And eat a cheese burger.
