Ruland/Springer. Toss a coin. Saw Ruland dominate a traveling Russian team on LI. The following year the NYC Metro Under 19 team plays the same Russian team at Iona and the Russia ref gives Ruland 2 charges early in the game. He knew who needed to sit down. That NYC team was stacked. Anyone recall the starters besides Ruland that day. I also attended a HS game where Springer's Ben Franklin HS (with Riche Adams) played Steve Burtts team (Westinghouse?). Springer was great. Jimmy V was there as was Lefty Driesell. Richie Adams grabbed every rebound. Sidney Green played at Jefferson I believe. I remember him showing up unannounced at a post season Goal club gathering at one of the local NR pubs. Staff was shocked to see him there. He apparently was visiting a relative in town and stopped by. Jimmy V went in to recruiting overdrive but to no avail.

Super, I'm pretty sure you're correct about Green and Adams, and we did defeat them, but I'm not sure if it was at MSG or the Meadowlands, even though I was at the game. Adams had a tragic ending, as I believe he was found guilty of murder. And didn't Green's son play for Florida's NCAA championship team a few years back? Definitely at the Meadowlands- correct about Adams situation & Green's son!

Jimmy V was amazing at that event. There were also later rumors that Adams would transfer to Iona. Oh well!

Wow... lets see who might have played on that team with Ruland... that would be players who graduated in 76 or 77. Who else were the top players that year? Do any of these names ring a bell?
Albert King from Fort Hamilton and played at Maryland Wayne McCoy from LI Lutheran who played at St. John's. Stan Wilcox, from North Babylon and played for Notre Dame Andre Battle of Yonkers and played at Loyola University Chicago Lowes Moore of Mount Vernon and played for West Virginia Jim Graziano of Farmingdale who played at South Carolina Daymon Yizar of Rye Neck and played at Wagner Kelly Tripucka - Bloomfield. NJ and Notre Dame or maybe our own Ted O'Gorman

Thanks. Definitely Wayne McCoy and Albert King. One of the guards was Kenny Page (went to New Mexico) I believe. Tripucka could have been there too. Great names.

Bernard Toone of Gorton HS, Yonkers. (Same guy who got into a halftime physical altercation with coach Mcguire at 1977 NCAA championship game for Marquette because he felt he was getting enough playing time) Games played at Emmerson Junior High School because it had the larger and nicer gym than Gorton. Only in Yonkers!

Wow, impressive thread. You guys really have some serious hoop viewing experience. Thought I remember someone posting once they saw Julius Erving in HS. Maybe it was Oldtimer, or maybe it was in college, but at Iona Prep or something.
