Back on March 28th, I stood in Clonard Cemetery at my sister's funeral. Both of my parents are buried in the same cemetery. While there, I had a strong sense of serendipity. Clonard Cemetery and church is the successor of the original Clonard Abbey, which was founded by St. Fenian around 520. I graduated from St. Finian's College (Prep). Clonard is part of Kinnegad parish, my hometown, and the hometown of Cardinal Glennon (St. Louis in the 1940's). Our homes are less than a 1/4 mile apart. Amongst the many scholars at Clonard Abbey were the "12 apostles of Erin". One of the twelve was St. Columba. As GaelFan has pointed out above, St. Columba founded Iona Abbey on the island of Iona. I graduated from Iona College. After some moving around for a while, I have settled in St. Louis for the past thirty years. Last week, my daughter attended her High School Graduation Ceremony in St. Louis Cathedral Basilica. The Basilica was built by Cardinal John Glennon. For a guy who has moved around as much as I have, I have not strayed from my roots.
