Back in 85 or 86 Iona recruited two guys from Canada. One was Jon Kijonek who transferred to Marist. The other was a 7' guy ..... anyone remember his name?

Yup, that was him. Nickname was "Smokey" because he smoked cigarettes - probably the reason why I don't believe he ever played. Back to Kijonek - probably one of the most hyped players we ever had - the " right-handed Chris Mullen". Had a sweet stroke but was very hesitant to take it - believe he went to Marist because of Dave Magarity.

Kijonek was way over hyped but he did produce at Marist. He also averaged about 10ppg as a freshman at Iona didn't he? We also had another Canadian a year later named Curtis Celestine.... I think they all were given their release on the same day. Dave Magarity walked to Marist and Kijonek and Celestine followed pretty quickly.

This thread inspires some trivia. Here's an "anyone remember" question I've never seen out here...
For each former Head Coach below, see how many assistants you can remember for that coach.
I'll start by priming the pump a little. ;D
Kevin Willard (2007-2010): Dan McHale, Shaheen Holloway, Steve Sauers, Casey Stanley
Jeff Ruland (1998-2007): Tony Chiles,
Tim Welsh (1996- 1998): Jeff Ruland
Jerry Welsh (1991-1996): Tim Welsh
Gary Brokaw (1986-1991):
Pat Kennedy (1980-1986):Kenny Williamson
Jim Valvano (1975-1980): Pat Kennedy

Jimmy V.-Tom Abatamarco, he recruited Jeff Ruland and became a HC(Drake, I believe). Alan Srebnick, who accompanied JV to Joe Rees' house, where we formed the Iona Fivers, now the Goal Club. Kenny Williamson, the Egg Man, was also a JV assistant. Jerry Welsh-Phil Weber, who I believe is an Asst. Coach in the NBA, today. Gary Brokaw-His top assistant was the former West Virginia star, Williams, I believe. Forgot his first name. His son played for us. Also had the former HS Coach, Bishop Loughlin, Pat something or other. A great HS coach, who only stayed one year. Tim Welsh- Bobby Walsh. Also had Craig Holcomb.
Probably still others.

I'm getting a migraine but I think former Mount Vernon HS coach Tony Fiorintino (SP?) may have been a Brokow assistant.

Tony F., Tim O'T and John Coffino all are correct. The former Loughlin caoch was Pat Quigley. And a jR assistant was former MT. Vernon coach, John Gargano (I believe).
