Iona Sports Night is coming up--Wednesday, October 12. New Iona Goal Club head honcho Jay Judge has asked me to invite all you hoops diehards to join us at this event, which has been a lot of fun in the past. Best part: it's FREE. You do NOT have to be a current Goal Club member to go to this event--so with no cost and no Goal Club membership needed, if you're an Iona basketball fan why would you NOT go to this?
The event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Mutual of America building in midtown NYC, 320 Park Ave, 35th Fl. It includes open bar and hor D’oeurves, and speakers include Director of Athletics Eugene Marshall Jr. and a few Iona head coaches.
Again, this is FREE, though you do need to RSVP to Jay Judge at 914-633-2071 or jjjudge@iona.edu if you want to go. You CANNOT just show up at the door.
Also, don't forget that Homecoming weekend is coming, which means Meet the Gaels mens and womens teams, the fundraiser that evening (Italian theme this year) and other athletics (and non-athletics!) stuff going on all weekend. I can't make Meet the Gaels, but I'll be at the fundraiser that night.

"so with no cost and no Goal Club membership needed, if you're an Iona basketball fan why would you NOT go to this?" Damn! Only because I'm in California!

First one I'll miss since its inception. Pre-Willard, it was a great source for info & insights prior to the season.

Last night's Sports Night was a very well attended event. I'm guessing close to 100 people were there. Jay Judge, who emceed the event, did a great job, along with Liz Faia in puting the event together. Speakers were Dr. Nyre, Gene Marshall, Rick Santos, Tony Bozzella and Tim Cleuss. I'll just comment on what I heard, either from the public remarks or heard from other fans in attendance. Also, I'm sure others who were there, like Guy, EPatrick, JR, might have heard "stuff" that I didn't and hopefully they'll share it with us.
Women's BB: *As usual Tony was his usual enthusiastic self, which is always uplifting. Talking about recruiting, he credits assistant, Ashlee Kelly, who was out in Detroit watching her brother, Don, play for the Tigers, with expanding our recruiting base. That's how we were able to recruit players from Connecticut down to NC and Florida. And he might not finished. We'll see. *As of now his starting five looks Fregozi, PG, Martinez, OG, Ford, SF, Basic, PF and Jerridore, C. *He's very high on two freshmen, Martinez and Powell, and feel both will contribute, big time. To me, our success will be determined by the play of Suzi, Sabrina and Christina. *The team practices from noon to three and fans are encouraged to stop by and watch.
Men's BB: *As usual, TC was more closed mouth than Tony. He said that he wouldn't comment on guys who haven't played a game for Iona, and limited his comments to the returnees. He was very pleased with the shape that Scott is in, having lost 12 pounds. He expects him to be quicker as a result. I got the feeling that he wants him to pass more and shoot less. We'll have to see how that unfolds. Mike Glover also worked on his body and game over the summer and Tim is expecting even bigger things from Mike this year. He named Kyle Smyth as the team's hardest worker, and guesstimated that since the start of school, and using the net, Kyle has put up something like 30,000 (I'm sure it's an exageration) shots. Kyle will graduate this December and then start on his Master's, which he should complete by the time he leaves school in June, 2013. *Scheduling for this year was very difficult, as people don't want to play us until Mike and Scott graduate. Should be easier next year. *While Tim didn't mention recruiting, I did hear that we should have three, and possibly four early signings. And one or two of our potential recruits should be at Maroon Madness. We've seen two verbals, so I'm guessing that the third and maybe the fourth, if there is a fourth, will be a Big. *And still no word on Mo Mo.
Jay Judge: Closed the event by reminding everyone to join the GC and to attend the "Taste of Italy" on Homecoming weekend.
Now others who were there and have better memories than me, please fill us in. Thanks.
P.S. Meet the Gaels timeframe-Men , nine to noon and Women noon to three.

Indeed, great report!
Only thing I'll add is that I got the feeling Iona will turn to a 4-guard look in the early going, as our new frontcourt guys are still getting acclimated. I know people are worried about the glass, but a starting 5 of Machado, Smyth, Armand, Rashad James and Glover would cause a TON of matchup problems, even for a Purdue.

Let's not forget about Jenkins. There has not been much mention of him on this board this off season and I think we are forgetting about one of our best players.
I think this Senior is going to be a big factor and help win some games for the Gaels.
