I'm glad Chelseadal clarified his answer about his opinion of the women's team. I also read it as a crude and snide remark about the team. I would bet most of the fan's of the team would interpret it the same way though.
Guy's response was on target.

OK, let me save us all some time and say there are going to be some very mixed views on this topic. Please let's not rip women's hoops on the whole here, as I know some involved with the program read the board As for me, yeah, my "loyalty" goes to the mens' team first, and as such I'll be in Bridgeport Friday night. Of course, BPort is also far closer to my house. That said, if the men were not playing, or if they were playing a road game that I couldn't get to, I'd be at the women's game, hoping to finally get over the top against Giorgis. Again--there are some out here who simply can't get into the women's game, and that's fine. But let's not condemn the sport on the whole here out of respect of those in the Iona community who are very much fans of all that Tony's done for Iona. I for one was not trying to "rip" the women's team. I do respect all of the college athletes. All schools (with the possible exception of (Tennessee and UCONN) don't show up at arenas anywhere close to the men's teams. That is just the way it was and is. Well, I want to make it clear that I DID intend to "rip" the women's team and all women's athletics in general. As one of the greatest MAAC posters of all time once stated, women's basketball is "slow and sloppy"! Just kidding, of course. I have no problem with women's basketball and it has improved dramatically in the past 10 or 15 years. I even watch a UCONN game on TV once in a while, as a girl from our school district is starter on the team. (Unfortunately, the few times I watch seem to be the rare occasions that they lose). I was mainly trying to bust Guy's chops. I do, however, get a bit annoyed with Title IX and the fallacy behind it being imposed on the public. Let's face it, for the most part, and with certain notable exceptions, men's sports are way more popular than women's sports. Pretending otherwise doesn't change this, nor does acknowledging it demean the talented, competitive women who excel at the their sports.

I went to the woman's game verse Marist last year, and the Marist fans traveled quite well to the Hynes, I would say they outnumbered the Gael fans 5-1. I enjoyed the game, and if the Men weren't playing on the same night, I would have gone again. In general, I don't find Women's basketball as exciting as the men's game. though.

No question men's hoops (and other sports) are more popular. My point is that as Iona fans we should root for both teams to do well, and TRY to support the women's team where possible. I see 4-5 women's games per year, not including any games I watch on the web, and of course since I'm at the MAAC Tourney I see any Iona women's games there as well. plus the MAAC Tournament. There are some out here who far outdo my numbers above, which is great. Wish I had the time and the freedom of schedule, but my wife and kids would leave me if I spent multiple nights per week at Iona games.
Busting my chops out here may result in getting beaten and tossed into a hole and buried alive behind the garage at Iona. ("Casino" has been on cable a lot lately.)

Back in the day, before St. Louis, I was volunteered for a management development program which was facilitated by Margaret Hennig and Anne Jardim, co-authors of The Managerial Woman. A major premise of their book and their program, is that men have a huge developmental advantage over women because of their participation in football - not basketball, or soccer, only football.
While I accept the larger premise that sports are significant contributors to the development of leadership skills, I challenged them on limiting it to football. Holy smokes, I was run over by those two as a chauvinist. Now that we have many years experience with Title IX and women's sports, I wonder if they broadened their horizons.

I watched the Lady Gaels beat Canisius yesterday and I am looking forward to travelling up to Baltimore on February 10 to watch both the women and men play.
Go Gaels!!!

OK, I'm big enough to admit I was wrong. The women's games are now MORE important, after last night's disaster in Albany.

The women are tougher. MUCH tougher. And Bozella actually takes advantage of his depth.

Oh, for the record, I think Iona is a virtual LOCK to win at Fairfield on Friday. It's the games that follow that will be the problem, as this team can't play a high-level game more than once in a row.

I think they are going to lose again but will beat SPC.
I can not see them winning both at Manhattan and at Loyola.
They will lose one other along the way, 3 more losses. Either 3 or more losses or somehow they will wake up and run the table. They will not lose just 1 or 2 the rest of the way.
Have to say I now feel it is more likely they won't even get to the Maac championship then it is to win the Maac championship.

At this point it doesn't much matter other than 3 games in March in Springfield. Might as well experiment with players and styles and work on defense. Get Digs involved more and tell him he's in there to rebound and block shots. Go back to square one with what we know and go to school.

Nope. We'll beat Fairfield. Remember that I'm the one who predicted here and on the MAAC board that we could lose last night, while other Iona fans were predicting one-sided games. We will beat Fairfield, then SPC, Canisius and will win at Manhattan before losing at Loyola.
I have spoken. :-D
