Here is the link to the official Iona announcement on the Major Campus Plan Projects: www.iona.edu/About/News-Events/News/College-Announces-Major-Campus-Plan-Projects.aspxSpecifically, here is the information on Athletics: New Athletics Arena ComplexExpansion and reconfiguration of current Iona facilities for men’s and women’s basketball, as well as women’s volleyball, are needed to stay competitive with peer NCAA Division 1 institutions, to improve the student-athlete experience, and to elevate the experience for all fans attending events. A larger, more fan-inspired venue will also provide better multi-use facilities for non-athletic campus events such as major lectures, performances and campus gatherings. The new facility will include • An arena configuration, enhanced entrance, entertainment suites, and more convenient public restroom facilities, ticket office, concessions, apparel store, basketball offices, a strength and conditioning facility, and an academic center for athletes • Hall of Fame/donor lounge/entertainment area • Sports medicine facility, broadcast facilities, equipment room, locker rooms and storage “This project will bring Iona into the top tier of our peer institutions in support of our students,” said Rick Cole Jr., Iona’s director of Athletics. “It transforms our entire athletics program and gives the College a first-class facility for other campus and community events.”

An arena (seating on all sides of the court) with a capacity of 3,600 to 4,000 would be terrific! The closer to 4,000 the more sustainable the arena will be for the college in the decades to come. Concerts, celebrity tennis, hosting the local high school championships and much more. The Arena will help attract more students and of course help the coaches recruit players. I contributed to the last campaign and plan to do more this time around! Go Gaels good luck tonight!

Did you actually list celebrity tennis ahead of the high school basketball championships?

Sounds like a very aggressive plan, hope in reality it can come to fruition.

Iona College under the leadership of a President Nyre has made strides towards improving relations with New Rochelle. Everything seems to be moving positive directions. Let's hope.

Knowing the animosity that a large group of citizens have towards Iona College the battle is just starting...Such concerns over the decrease of property tax income along with the tax exemptions it will bring. Traffic and parking concerns, the increased Police problems along the North Ave. corridor, and any other picayune complaints that will reinforce their position
Its round one.....Best of luck and wishes to Dr. Nyre and Iona...I hope that I will still be around for the final round...I have had hopeful visions of a arena to be proud of since I sat in the old wooden gym left over from WW 2 construction.......

One of the first events at the original Mulchey Center was a sold out tennis match with Jimmy Connors. I was wondering if anyone would catch that one!

I see that SUNY Stony Brook will have a renovated Basketball Arena in a bowl layout, this fall. Cost is reported at about 21 Million. Sounds like they got a large donation. Seating capacity will be about 4000. Sounds great!

Love Dr. Nyre's ambition, can't see school paying anywhere near the dollars necessary to rearrange and renovate an already outdated facility. We simply need a new different facility locally, Westchester Cty. and other organizations AND colleges in the area have to get together and figure this out. We all have outdated facilities and as a result it's very tough to get to the next level.
