OT, Vermont defeated Siena, and I believe Brian Voelkel finished his career with a 4-0 record against the Saints. I remember Soup, former Saint cheerleader, telling us that Iona was lucky not getting him as he was terrible. B/t/w, he had a double-double last night.

In the Siena game, EIGHT guys fouled out, four from each team. Also, four techs, two each. John Hughes worked that game and I hope/pray he doesn't work an Iona game. I'd even take Joe DeMayo over him.
In the Manhattan game, both wins were on the road, and their game against Columbia wouldn't have been close, had their PG (Alvarado) not shot 3-11 from the foul line. And they (their fans) can say wait until Pankey gets the rust off. As we know for a BIG, not named David Laurey, that's not an easy thing to do.

I thought Jimmy Patsos had brought in the new Fab 5 at Siena. Weren't they supposed to be kicking tail against these "lesser" opponents early on? At the end of the day, most of them were Loyola (MD) recruits whose other offers were from the NEC and other lower level conferences. They aren't what they think they are. Oh, and take a look at their upcoming schedule. It could be a while until the ol' Saints get into the win column. But they're the cream of the MAAC, right? Not the Gaels or Jaspers. Spare me!

I was at last night's Manhattan game at Columbia. I was eager to see the MAAC Preseason Favorites. I didn't recall Beamon being quite so thin. He is listed as 6' 4" and 175 pounds..and he may be lighter than even that. I am sure it adds to his quickness, but it certainly doesn't look like an NBA body. He seems to have gotten off to a great 2 game start and will certainly will be a favorite for player of the year in the league. Richards has a beautiful 3 point stroke and he will kill any opponent that gives him a good look from 3. Columbia did a much better job of nullifying him in the second half after he scorched them repeatedly in the first half. I hope Iona doesn't take a half to figure this fact out. I don't know if their two big men were ever on the court together. They are both good at blocking shots and intimidating. Their poor FT shooting almost turned this into a loss.......as a matter of fact, it should have. If it weren't for a perfectly missed free throw with seconds to go, they would have lost. But Manhattan came up with the offensive rebound, only to miss, and then Beamon got the rebound and put back, only to be fouled with just .5 seconds to go. He made the FT, earning the 1 point nail biting win. I thought Alvarado got away with not just one, but two traveling violations on a key drive with about a minute to go, where he made a bucket and I think he was fouled and completed a traditional 3 point play. Columbia looked every bit Manhattan's equal with some clutch shooting and competitive play all game long. At the half the Beamon / Richards combo had 30 of Manhattan's 38 points. Their attack got more balanced in the second half when Richards was being guarded tougher on the perimeter. Beamon played two strong halfs and is clearly their most reliable contributor.

Do you consider Columbia a decent team this year?

Here is how the IVY Coaches see things.......pegging Columbia at the bottom. 2013-14 Ivy League Men's Basketball Preseason Media Poll First-Place Votes in Parentheses
School Harvard (17) Penn Yale Princeton Brown Cornell Dartmouth Columbia Points 136 100 96 93 74 38 38 37 Ken Pomeroy has them about 200th at this early stage. So I guess I would say, based on a limited sample size of 1 game, Columbia looked to have been helped by poor Free Throw Shooting by Manhattan to have had the shot they did to win this game at home. A stretch expectation for Columbia would be to finish .500 in the Ivy. Their Coach had them playing hard throughout and I am sure many of them felt they were about to win, after Manhattan missed the first of 3 Free Throws, when they were up three with 4 seconds to go. I see that they won their opener by about 20 against Md Eastern Shore.

Having watched Kansas score 94 points against Duke last night, its possible they could score 110-120 against us in an up and down tempo game.

*I didn't check the boxscore but saw that Holy Cross defeated Sacred Heart, 122-112, in double OT. Probably a lot of fouls.
*In their season opener Syracuse started slowly against Cornell and trailed by 14 points late in the first half. Well two days ago they jumped out to an early 25-8 lead and coasted to a 15 point win. Naturally Ram fans said that the second half was more indicative of the two teams. FU does have two vg players, Frazier (Sr.) and Severe (Fr.) and could move into the middle of the A10, possibly with a .500 record, as they have a lot of cupcakes on their sked. Interesting to see how they do against Manhattan.
