So this commitment makes it three for 2016;
Kai Mitchell - PF Jan Svandrlik- SF Saren Westrop-PF
We lose: Ibn English IW Rountree Possibly Amayo + we have one ship in hand this year. So 2 (or 3 if Amayo is not granted the extra year) more possible commits for 2016 if everyone committed arrives.
Does this match up with everyones info?

IONA86, EP, and Guy for his posting of Saren's letter, thanking his friends, thanks for the news. First off, the video, and it looks to me that it's correct, he shows as Wing/SF. As 86 said it's hard to evaluate the level of competition, but some things stand out to me: *As 86 said, VG court vision. *Runs the court well. *Can finish around the rim with either hand. *O/S shot is a possible concern, as he seems to have a low release. *Reminds me of former Gael great, Mindagus Tminskas.
IONA86, I agree with your scholarship count. My guess is that if TC and JG have their druthers, and we only have one more opening, we'd land Travis Aston. If KA doesn't win his waiver appeal, then we'll definitely go for a PG, also.
Saren, welcome to Iona.

One thing I noticed from those two Saren Westrop highlight clips: he played in a league or conference with a 24 second clock. That bodes well for him adapting to Cluess' up-tempo style.

ESPN gives Atson a Grade of 76. For a comparison, Ced had a 62 grade last year. Here is their write up:
ESPN Analyst Updated 01/23/2015 Strengths: Atson is a scoring wing who can get hot and score in bunches. He's a deceptive athlete capable of rising up in transition and making momentum changing plays. He has a high release on his jumpers and excels at scoring over smaller defenders in the mid-range area. He loves to split defenders en route to the rim and can also stretch defenses out to the arc. Weaknesses: He has a tendency to play the game a little upright, which sometimes limits his quickness of the bounce and consequent ability to blow right by guys off the dribble. He's a better mid-range shooter than he is at the three-point line, in large part because his stroke can go flat at times. Bottom Line: He's a scoring swingman who can make explosive plays in transition and can also scores in the half-court in ways in which will translate to the college level.

If Ced was 6'5 his ratings would have been much higher.

Interesting that Iona landed a recruit from western Canada that did not play at a prep school or AAU program in the States. Curious if this commitment is the result of Coach Leichner on staff. He apparently was brought into the program to mine the foreign talent. With Saren Westrop I like the fact that he played football as that typically means he knows how to play physical and is not bothered by being bodied. I bet he will not need his ego stroked as western Canadians typically are pretty modest individuals. Expecting him to come in practice/play hard; be a team player; and wait his turn. Every team needs players like this to fill their roster. On Travis Atson, I feel that the change in prep school coupled with the decision to not reclassify means he has his eyes set on going higher than Iona. Maybe he realizes that a mid-major would give him the opportunity to play more often and quickly vs a BCS school, but the cache of a BCS program is pretty hard to ignore. Hopefully he realizes that Iona would give him the chance to play in front of family and in an uptempo system geared to his talents.

If we build two on campus Starbucks, an all night McDonalds, a student pool with grotto and wine bar , a climbing wall, student meditation center with sponsored between classes massages and all materials used to construct these perks are done with environmentally friendly materials... we will move up to a top 50 school in the US News and World Report rankings.

ctbill, since you are reciting academic facts. The rankings for business grad schools by salary potential www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/best-schools-by-type/mba had Iona College at #23 besting a number of other prestigious schools. Higher rated than UNC-Chapel Hill, Boston University, Vanderbilt, etc. Funny how perception of other schools does not meet the reality. Additionally Iona grads do look out for each other after graduation. My youngest son with a 2012 degree in Finance had an internship under another grad which then led to working for another grad at Morgan Stanley where is now supervising several recent Iona grads. Hopefully these recruits realize that fact for their professional lives outside basketball.

So once again despite all the speculation posts Iona comes up with a surprise recruit from deep western Canada...We cast a wide net which is baited to catch talent unknown to most...We do not spend much time on reputation type recruits as they are hard to obtain...Instead we search far and wide and put obtainable hidden talent as our goal...Our catch has netted many hidden gems...Perhaps this is the reason for our quite recruiting news... It has worked wonders in recent years and is miles ahead of most other programs particularly those in the MAAC.....

Travis Atson has three official visits scheduled to UCSB, Tulsa and Depaul. Just completed the UCSB visit. Any local talent would be crazy to waste an official visit on a local school since there are minimal expenses vs flying cross-country. Just because he is taking these visits does not mean they are his only remaining choices. I expect he will get other offers before October and use his remaining official visits accordingly while taking unofficial visits also. Way too early to write-off Iona.
