IW hits a few shots--different game. Casimir is a frosh @ likely SEC 2-3 team--not ready yet; Amayo really coming on;. DL a stud--needs to keep this level. (Cam in the wings.)
The boys played their balls off today , really looked good until they ran out of gas , so yeah I'm going to agree that maybe we should have gone deeper in the rotation for minutes.....but I am happy with their effort
If we saw this team in a 4-13 or 5-12 NCAA game, I'd like our chances. We WERE on the road, and our physical condition will be better at season's end. Plus, and I'm serious, I think Cluess will realize by then that he needs to use his bench a bit more (but not too much more in an NCAA game).
I agree mostly Guy but in the 2nd half when Arkansas started rolling, they looked eerily similar to the Ohio State team we faced a few years back in the tourney. A big, talented, physical team with many scoring options. All in all, Arkansas was just a tough match up for us today and probably for most mid majors.
No. Ohio State was an Elite Eight team. And we were a 15 seed that wasn't even top 100 RPI if I remember correctly. Arkansas is better than us but they still feel like a 5 seed. On a neutral floor later in the year they are only slight favorites.

if dublin wasn't brought here to play a few minutes in big games, why did we waste a scholarship on a 1 yr player, to beat fairfield in february? the bench needs to play more, 1 at a time, if laury and aj both get 2 minutes extra around a timeout each i think we might have had the legs to lose by single digits, amayo is not in shape to play a whole half as of yet
Would rather play to win than to lose by single digits. Only chance to win this game is to ride our horses for all we can. Ced and IW were combined 4 for 19. That was the issue, not that Hines didn't give DL3 or AJ a blow for a few minutes.
Btw, Ibn played 18 mins and Dublin played 6. What's the problem with the minute distribution there?
05, the point was we would have hung in longer, i didn't say play to lose whats wrong withe minute distribution? our studs GOT NO REST, this wasn't a half court game against Canisius they got tired And why was Dublin brought here then?

I said I agree mostly
Clearly this Ark team was not as good as the OSU team a few years back, but they do share the same "type" of make up with a big front line and skilled guards who could be effective inside and out.
I do agree with the 4/13, 5/12 scenario but I also realize this would still be a tough game due to Ark's depth and size.

but the 25th rank team would be a 7 seed, so this would be a good matchup if we were 12 or 13

If Ark winds up a #7 seed, then we will be looking at the strongest NCAA tourney field ever. From what I saw today, would be surprised if Ark was not a 3, 4, or 5 at worst.
I've asked this question before, but didn't see an answer. Someone said that Arkansas beat Kentucky twice last year. Is this true or just a rumor? Anyone know?

Super, thanks. That's pretty impressive. And b/t/w, reading the Siena board and Tony, had a positive review of the Gaels' performance, yesterday. The End must be near. (Smiley Face)
Very nice quote from the Arkansas Board after Super posted to their board:
"Go to the Iona message board and they were impressed, mightily impressed by our length, depth and ability to run 94 feet.....initially they thought that we would get tired because Iona is used to playing at this pace...then stark reality hit around the 7 minute mark in the first half and second half when Iona's legs got rubbery....the Iona fans are very knowledgable about basketball so I would advise all to read their ARK GAME THREAD....they think we are special and so do I"
1) We have several big time players and our starting 5 is very strong as we hung with Arkansas all game. 2) Our bench needs to improve and/or we need to play them a lot more. No reason for our starters to play so much, we will burn them out before the maac tourney. 3) I have no problem with TC playing Cas and Amayo as much yesterday because it will prepare them better for the bigger stage games down the line. 4) Way too many turnovers which isn't characteristic of us. 5) We got out shot from the 3 which never happens. 6) A player like CAM would be a game changer in that type of game. When IW or Cas was struggling we could've used the size and offensive skills of cam to give us a boost. 7) Our bench is a steep drop-off from our starters. Besides Ibn and Hines in some instances I don't see help from any one else. From the SMALL sample size of Dublin I think he could help but I can't make that judgment yet until he plays more.
Just some thoughts about yesterdays game but hey it's over and I'm proud of the way we played and our success so far this year. I really think this team is a special team, with all the talent and pieces. I expected us to lose but wasn't upset at all being that it was a 2 point game until the last 7 minutes.

Arkansas is what Iona is trying to emulate. But, as we are a mid-major version, I am not sure we could ever amass that level of depth. Well, that, and our staff's reluctance to let the guys play. No, we couldn't get away with our #8-10 rotation guys out there for extended minutes, but surely they should have gotten a little run if only to keep our stars' legs less "rubbery".
I am sure their fans will watch us with interest this year, to see if we are as good as we showed for 30 minutes. For their fans visiting, Iona's scheduled isn't loaded with a ton of big names, but we do play a host of quality mid-majors the rest of the way too. I expect our end-of-season RPI to be in the 60s, if not higher. I suspect Arkansas will be top 20 in RPI, pretty safely.

I got home from Arkansas at 11PM last night - just dodged an ice storm that delayed school openings this morning in STL. Great trip, and really enjoyed meeting Iona05 and a few of the players. Fabulous young men!
Arkansas is an ascending team, and will end up in the top 20 if they are not there today. Iona did not have its A game (credit to Arkansas), and we were still beating the Hogs deep into 3 quarters. We were handling everything they threw at us, and had the lead at the 15 minute mark. Then the missed chippies started - tired legs. We missed 8, count 'em, 8 LAYUPS in the final 5 minutes - not missed treys, or even FT's. Our legs were gone. Mike Anderson teams (and I know Mike from Mizzou)do not allow layup opportunities in the final 5 minutes of the game. Simply put, our reinforcements did not arrive. I thought Ryden and Grant were badly out of position on D when they got in. I don't know whether or not they do not yet read what is being throw at us.
David Laury was the best big man on the floor. He forced Mike Anderson to protect Portis. And when Portis came back in the stretch run, David still handled him even though his legs were gone. Something else, I have not seen anyone mention is the fact that Walton Arena was uncomfortably hot. I was in an Iona tee shirt and was sweating my ass off just sitting there. Nah, Mike Anderson with his deep squad would not do that - you think? '05, what do you think?
Anderson had a spy (Number 5) on Schad. His 3 pt window of opportunity was small. They were also ready when Schad took it tot he hoop. Holy s**t, is Schad fast. Good luck to any MAAC team that puts the press on Schad and Ibn.
Kelvin is frightening spectacle when he decides to take it to the hole. People just do want to step in front of him - like Matt Snell making it into the backfield.
People said Isaiah was off. His touch was not there, but he was the second best big man on the floor.
This is a really good team. Even with the addition of Cam, we need either Jeylani, Ryden, or Daniel to bring some relief for David.
David was a warrior yesterday - a Mike Gloveresque warrior. Don't know if you could see it on TV, but Sam had to ice David during every time-out in the second half.
