Here's the problem I have with that line of thinking. 1. It's pretty clear that at the very least. AJ threw the ref off of him 2. It's all clear that as a result of that the ref was at least thrown off balance and fell. - to me whether the ref is a klutz or not is irrelevant. AJ threw him and he was able to hold himself up on his hand, so he didn't fall all the way to the floor. To me the key point is that the ref initiated the contact. I think it's a whole different thing if it was the other way around.
I agree with your point. The ref initiated the contact. Almost every fight I have ever seen where a ref tries to hold back a player the player initially tries to get away. AJ tried to get away with a pretty minimal move and the ref went flying, which made it look way worse. Most refs would not have fell like this. What AJ did was a normal reaction and how the ref fell was not what you would expect from Aj's attempt to get away. The ref made this look worse than it was. That being said I think Iona is going to self impose a 1 game suspension, which would not have been necessary had the ref not fell.
No flop but his holding back a player from fighting talents are equal to his reffing ability. One of the worst reffed games I ever saw.
As for Iona 1970. Weather that day was pretty bad so the game was right to be cancelled. I think Fairfield had to move it to a night they could still have SNY carry the game live, that is why moved to next week.
At this point, three days later, I do not see how the MAAC can issue any suspensions from the so called "brawl". If the actions of AJ, or any player, from the "brawl" warranted any type of suspension it should have been announced no later than the next day. There was plenty of video available and the MAAC office spoke to everyone involved by Sunday night. Poor job by the MAAC not announcing their decision before the coaches conference call this afternoon. They put TC and Dunne in a very bad position, and opened the door for all of the bloggers to litter twitter with the coaches responses. How can TC and Dunne make any comments, without any official decision from the MAAC office? If a decision can't be made three days later, then obviously the actions of any of the player did not rise to the level for anyone to be suspended. Having said that, I will not be shocked that AJ gets a 1 game suspension, mostly from all of the negative tweets from today's coaches conference call.
I just watched the ESPN3 video again. Couple takes: 1. English didn't "throw" him, but he did "hook" him as a ballhandler would to a defender. He did "handle" him in some way. 2. The SPC bench cleared immediately. Iona's did not, and did so only after SPC's did. 3. Hines took a good shove from one of the SPC bigs, and was in the middle of their entire team. I think this may have been what triggered the over-reaction by IW, who had no business getting involved. And I think Amayo running over to the other side was to try to get IW out of there, but Laury beat him to it. 4. Sherman and Kennedy are fucking assholes with agendas. They put absolutely no blame on the refs or on the St. Peter's players for letting things gradually get out of hand during the game. And if that's true what Iona05 reported about what Kennedy said about Laury, I'll be paying that fuck a visit on social media. 5. No punches thrown, so everything of course was completely blown out of proportion. If you want to say English deserves to be reprimanded for putting his hands on a ref, fine, but otherwise, nothing really happened out there.

Guy, agree completely. Especially about Amayo. IMO, he was running around in an effort to protect his teammates. Not looking for trouble as Sherman indicated. The announcers owe Iona and Amayo a BIG apology. And Rick Cole should make that request to the League.

Usually in a situation like this you hear the announcers being very cautious not to jump to conclusions. Sherman was all over AJ saying it was poor sportsmanship at the end of the game. If you look at the video, Washington starts jawing first. Sherman just assumed it was AJ and went on blaming him. I don't know generally what kind of pre-conceived opinions announcers have about teams and players, but Sherman appears to have issues with Iona. Braziller also. Not everyone in the media, but some guys appear to make assumptions or create certain beliefs probably without knowing much about Iona at all.
Mark Singelais, Zach Braziller, Josh Newman, Ryan Restivo and Doug Sherman all showed their true colors. The facts are not important, just sell papers and advertising with sensationalist comments. I repeat that they are not "Journalists", they are "Editorialists" stating opinions. They have effectively "bloodied the water" and now have everyone's attention. Now the piling on begins from all corners. Refer to Guy's twitter feed below. Nick Cacchione, whoever he is, notes that "according to Patsos, the MAAC is waiting until after this weekend when Siena plays both Iona and SPC." Shame on Patsos if he made the comment, I doubt he said it. Siena fans are already expecting a conspiracy involving the MAAC, Iona and SPC to screw them. Absolutely ridiculous! The MAAC by not acting more quickly has created this fiasco.

Dunne is a very good coach, but I always thought he was a little different. Last Saturday, I came to watch the woman's game, and right at the start of the second half, he came out and sat down in the stands by himself, just a few seats from me. He stayed there for about 1/2 hour and said nothing to anyone. Then Sherman and Kennedy came in and Dunne got up and they started talking like they were old friends. They had to talk and laugh for over 30 minutes. What I found odd, was that his team was out warming up, he paid no attention to them or the coaches. With about 7 minutes to go before the game started, he stopped talking and finally headed into the locker room. I never saw a coach act like that before a game. Anyway. just a observation that had me wondering if maybe Sherman, Kennedy and Dunne are best friends, thus the St Peter's favoritism concerning our little brawl.
Fuck the Siena douche bags on the Siena/MAAC boards. Tony and MTS calling Iona a team of thugs, yet they have Poole who was kicked out of campus housing a couple years ago for beating the shit out of another student and punched out a teammate earlier this year. And I guess they forget that Siena got into a real brawl in their preseason trip to Canada last year, where actual punches were thrown, and Evan Hymes broke a bone in his hand hitting somebody from the other team. Complete delusional assholes
Agree with Guys points and agree with Husker. Zac Braziller of the post despises iona but he has to hide it a bit because he writes for the post. How many games does st. Chicken have to lose before they bump them out of the two spot in metro top 10.
sharkey, those guys have nothing else to do with their lives. I feel badly for them. I did not know of the scandals at Siena, nor do I care about them. If they get their jollies over "brawls" involving Iona, let them have at it. Strange that our "brawl" did not involve fisticuffs.

Go Gaels!!!
Agreed. Plus if I recall, Siena and QPAC got into a similar shoving match last year at the end of one of their games last year. total assholes

Why is this taking so long? I'm wondering if the MAAC might be grappling with the proper role of the officials here. Once the horn sounds to end the game, the refs don't really have any policing authority anymore, I think. For instance could they eject a guy or issue a technical at that point? No, the game is over. So what is their purpose at that point. Usually they just leave the court. Here a ref pulled English from a confrontation with Washington, albeit trying to do the right thing, but at that point is he acting in his official capacity as a ref? The game is over. At that point he's really just another guy on the court. How do you suspend English for pushing aside just another guy on the court? They may be trying to sort this out.
