What would a short term extension do? This is absurd I already said it will allow him to recruit more players to make the job more attractive. As it is now, we are in a hole. If you hire a new coach now, you will be locked into a contract with a subpar coach just because of the timing of the hire. Sampson might not come and Barnes-Thompkins might not either. So far we have the no. 38 class in the nation, with more possibly on the way. Let him finish his recruiting. That's the one thing he does well. Nobody wants the job as it stands now though. This is what is happening. But if a perspective coach sees talent on the roster he will be more inclined to come. Then you will get a better coach for the long term. That is all I' m saying. Evidently, SJU placed about as much credibility in reksonn as does '70 here.

He's out but is it the best thing? No it is not. That's what I was saying. They probably lose Sampson now. And maybe Jordan and Obekpa. The players liked Lav. How are they going to recruit new players with the old players still on campus. I keep on posting this. Timing is everything. You can't pretend the situation is something other then what it really is. You can't be emotional. Lavin would have brought in good players for another coach later.

When they get a good coach I will say your post is legitimate.

I feel St Johns will need to try to make impact hire to appease alumni and recruits. Never really felt Tim Cluess was a target. Coach Cluess has shown his commitment to Iona and his players by not interviewing for jobs each spring. To me he wants to make his mark at Iona and he has unfinished business. I hope Masiello stays at Manhattan as the MAAC needs them to be competitive while the Marists and Niagara make the turn to being competitive. He is good for the rivalry. The St. John's situation could be disasterous with the wrong hire.

I didn't say they weren't going to fire Lavin, I said they shouldn't. Unless they know they could find a can't miss replacement. Which I doubt.

The extension means little in college basketball. If they triple his salary to go to the big east it will be tough for him to say no, he will also be closer to home

Cluess did interview with Hofstra two years ago and wanted that job. Iona wouldn't compromise on the buyout, nor should they have. What these local coaches are doing is leveraging the SJU situation. Good for both Cluess and Iona. Tim gets long term security and Iona gets a very good coach for the long term.

I doubt they would buyout such a long term extension. That's like 2 million dollars.

Coach Cluess has shown his commitment to Iona and his players by not interviewing for jobs each spring. He interviewed for Hofstra and was halfway out the door until Nyre brought him back.

SJU low balled Lavin, wanted to give him a pay cut, The question is was it a performance driven reduction, or an economic decision?
