Ive heard a few different thing about SJU and Lavin. My boss' wife is a Dean at St Johns(she deals with some players), she said there was a rumor on campus that Lavin isnt coming back at all. He and his wife both want to go back to California and he'll say its due to health reasons that he cant return. I posted that on SJU board and supposedly it caused a ruckus on campus. My neighbors kid is the student manager, I saw him on Christmas Eve for a minute and asked when Lavin is coming back. He said "Hes not". I should have been more specific, but it was XMas eve. I think Lavin said he wont be back til next year, but I wouldnt be surprised if hes back for the UCLA game. I think hes back for the game before, which is at Seton Hall

Lol... he might not shy away but is wife might. This is a guy who never saw this much money before.... I am sure his wife loves Iona. Also going to one of the Bigs can cause further issues by requiring travel all over the country to recruit. His family may not like that either.... not everything is about money or a challenge. It's always about the money! Always! BTW there are more schools out there than just SJU! Tim is a New York guy... I do not think he will go anywhere outside of Two hours from NYC. That limits him to only a few schools that would be better coaching jobs than Iona.

When the Iona job was open I told everyone we should look at either of the Hurly brothers.... everyone told me I was nuts. They all thought Dan would never leave coaching high school and they thought Bobby was too busy breeding horses.
With that said I am very happy with Tim. He has won at every level so i am going to support him until he proves us all wrong. I think the guy will stick around and will win for us.

Guys, he's making in $200,000+ range with a short term contract. (Security for the long term???) He has to worry about scheduling guarantee away games (plural) to meet the budget. Ask what his recruiting budget is. (Didn't KW get a mill a year for 5 years without winning a MAAC tournament game?)
I wasn't necessarily referring to facilities in my previous post. I think you ask the president to make a greater commitment to the program begining with the coach's contract and overall b'ball budget with the goal of testing Iona86's theory about success increasing interest in the college.

They were paying Ruland what......about $350,000? If Willard wins I would be more than excited to lock him in for 7 years.
Also I heard that Willard's contract was up to $5 mil for five years but more than half of that was incentives. So you can assume that he is making about $500,000 base.

Wow I didnt think he was getting that much. That being said, do MAAC coaches stay longer than 5 years? If youre offered big conference $, youre going. Mihalich ever interview after those good years at Niagara? Hes an exception I guess. Last year was John Dunne's year to make a move, Now he's stuck there. Gotta take the big job when youre hot

$200k is mor than 90% of the people in the country make. Of course, they don't all live in NYC.

Announce it everywhere in the media that you wont be back. And it will be a huge story when he returns this season, just in time to close the deal on recruits

TC's situation is very different than KW's was. KW was a young guy who took a program that was in the dumpster and turned it around. He left Iona on a upward trajectory. TC inherited a very good program from KW, and to date has struggled to meet expectations. Especially this year. Very different story than with KW, and TC is 53 years old, which is hardly an asset in the coaching job market for a guy with only 2 years at the D1 level. I like TC and really hope he succeeds here at Iona. But for TC, success will be measured against the expectations for this team coming into the season. Anything less than an NCAA bid will be viewed by the basketball world at large as a disappointing season for this Iona team. That will negatively affect TC's ability to move from Iona to another job, let alone to SJU. TC needs to get this team's head out of its collective ass and begin playing up to their very high potential. I hope he does it, but I'm not holding my breath at this point.

I have been off this board for the last several days though I did listen to Monday's game and was as disappointed as all others. That said, my first impression of this discussion got me to wondering if I had mistakenly gone to one of the delusional boards (AKA Fordham or Siena). I don't mind criticism - hell anyone needs and should be criticized in the hopes of improvement. However, many in this thread seem ready to move on in the HC category. Is there anyone here who, at the beginning of last season, would have thought Iona would have been one of the last few teams playing in March? Is there anyone here who would have thought Iona would have 3 players who "may" have NBA careers in their futures (2 of whom were recruited by TC)? Has TC been perfect? HELL NO! I am neither a TC backer nor a TC detractor - I AM AN IONA SUPPORTER, ALUM AND FAN! The criticism and discussion of how to improve performance and get this team to play CONSISTENTLY at the level which we know is possible is fine! IMO, some of the other comments are overboard. Let's win in Springfield and then take a couple in the NCAAs and this will all be academic. But to do so will require ALL OF US PULLING IN THE SAME DIRECTION! I likely will not be able to attend either Springfield or the NCAA. AS A RESULT I NEED ALL OF YOU TO TAKE OVER MY ENERGY AND CHEER THESE GAELS ON! GO GAELS!
P.S. It may be that Kyle Smyth's recent tweet was directed at all Iona fans - I agree with Kyle!

Admittedly my reaction after the Siena loss was overwhelmingly negative. In the heat of the moment just minutes after a loss the disappointment is so great and eventually the realization of an opportunity (at large bid) is lost.
Now that heart rates have calmed down and the blood is no longer boiling it's time to accept the position we are in and make sure that we are the team playing in the Championship game.

Hope you are well. I don't have a major criticism of Cluess's handling of the team or the team's results so far. This is far from a perfect team and things need to be addressed, but I'm not interested in abandoning Cluess. I saw a chance for a possible at-large for this team evaporate with the Siena loss, and that was very disappointing. That's what set me off. And when I read from posters, and who knows if its true, that he's talking to or meeting with SJ's now, during the stretch run of the season, that burns me up. If its not true, good for him. I haven't seen any evidence of, nor have I suggested that the man is classless like some posters here contend. I don't even know the guy. I'll be back to cheering the Gaels Friday night, with more realistic expectations.
