I have stayed away from the board after posting in a couple of threads on Monday night. In my day to day life I argue with people over the phone; by way of email; by way of letters; and in the courtroom – I do not come here to argue further. This is a forum that I use to keep up to date with Iona College Basketball and be involved in friendly and constructive dialogue with the well informed and articulate fans who post here.
Like Mr. Doom, and some others, I was somewhat stunned by some of the things I read on the board after the Siena game. While every fan is entitled to voice their opinion, personal attacks are unnecessary and beneath the overall tone of this board. I know that we were all disappointed and pretty angry about the loss at Siena. But regardless of how disappointed and angry we may have been, I have to believe that the basketball team, from TC right on down to the waterboys, felt the sting to a far greater degree than any of us.
I am, and I am sure the vast majority of people here are, proud to call TC our coach. From what I have read and seen of him he is a class act guy. In every interview I have watched or heard he takes full responsibility for losses. He has said that it is his job to motivate the team. I hope Iona recognizes his talent and I hope TC stays at Iona for a long time.
From what I have seen and read about the team, they are good young men both on and off the court and a credit to Iona College. Can they mature more, certainly – but who among us, including old guys like me, can’t.
I am sure that the vast majority of the remarks made after the Siena loss were out of pure frustration. I also believe that every member of this board will be cheering on this team at Fairfield, for the rest of this season (hopefully well into March in The Dance), and for years to come.
There is nothing that can be done about our losses to date; all that the team can do is play their hardest, smartest, and with purpose each time they take the court. While the losses to Hofstra, Manhattan and Siena were hard to take (or as TC said about the Manhattan loss, “disgraceful”) this team has to move past them, learn from mistakes, and resolve not to let wins get away from them. Time is running out on this season and it’s time the team plays within itself, but with a sense of urgency to finish out games. I am reminded of the line from “A Bronx Tale”, “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent”. If this team plays up to their potential, I am certain that they will win more often than lose. But whether they play hard, smart and with purpose is for them to decide as a team. I surely do not want these guys to look back after the season and say to themselves, “We let it get away because we didn’t play up to our potential”. It’s time to start a new win streak, with a positive mindset, at Fairfield.
And it's time for me to once again review the file I have to argue a motion on in the morning.
Go Gaels!!!
