You're correct Gaelman. Loved him as a player and when he was an assistant to Welch. When he became the headcoach things changed. He wasn't much of a coach the last couple of years. I feel bad for those kids that came here to be instructed and coached by one of the best big men that played the game and weren't given that opportunity.

2 1/2 years at UDC - 1-20 first year, 11-15 second year, 16-3 so far this year. Yep, doesn't know how to run a program, doesn't know how to coach.

Yes, Division II certainly seems like the right place for Ruland. Iona's average RPI in Ruland's 6 years under the extension was 204.5. Iona was only in the top 150, in 1 of those 6 years. Even over his full 9 years (including the 3 years where he coached players inherited from Welsh) Iona only made the top 100 twice (#99 in 1999-2000 and #72 in 2005-06). His overall, average RPI was in the 170s. Remember, he inherited Kirksay, Hameed, Miller, Kresto, Grant, Norris, and Wilson. A solid coach would have averaged 25 wins per year those first 3 years, rather than 19. In 9 seasons, he was a whopping 4 games over .500. That is an average season record of 15.4 wins and 15 losses. Yeah, that guy really knows how to run a program (into the ground) and win (just as often as he loses).

Guys...I agree for the most part on the Ruland bashing (trust me, I do!), but before we annoint Cluess as the anti-Ruland let's wait and see how this year ends. Because as of right now, there are a lot of similarities between this team and that of the early Ruland era, where we had tremendous talent, poor chemistry, underachieving teams and subpar records.

I don't want this to become a Ruland debate, but the one thing that's true of him and was not true of Willard and thus far Cluess is that when Ruland's teams were one of the best, they won the championship--even from the 2 seed on multiple occasions. Hard to know how Willard would have done last year, but all we do know is that he lost 3 MAAC Tournament games in 3 years, and had zero wins. Cluess got us to the pinnacle, but not over the top. He needs to get us over the top now, or questions will arise again.

With the year Iona and Cluess are having. . .why is anyone even bringing up Ruland’s name?
The last I heard of Ruland he was going around bashing Iona which means he is indirectly bashing all of us Iona supporters. About six months after Ruland was let go by Iona, I asked our old AD “how many calls or comments did you get complaining about Ruland’s termination. . .and the AD’s answer was “zero”.
If Iona wanted “Ruland the Coach” the school would have kept him. . .but it didn’t.
Personally I’d take Tim Cluess as a coach, person and representative of the school any day.
If people want to talk about “Ruland the Coach” maybe they should do it on another website. Right now it may be disrespectful to Tim Cluess and the job he is doing right now to be having Ruland discussions on this Iona site.

Please don't take any comments I made about "Ruland the Coach" in any way as an insult to Coach Cluess ar even KW for that matter. I am a big fan of our coach and hope he sticks around a long time whether or not we win this years championship. My remarks were simply in response to others and in defense of Jeff. I respect others opinions and if you don't like Jeff that's fine. If you decide to post it, I will respond. Over and out...

I am very happy that the College recognized TC's talent and signed him to a multi-year contract. I feel confident that it is going to be a mutually beneficial relationship.
Go Gaels!!!

I'm a frequent visitor to this site but rarely comment or post; however, I thought the faces behind Cluess in this picture say it all. Isn't that Bobby Gonzalez and Dermon Player thinking what might have been? nydailynews.com/sports/college…

It looks like him...was the picture from the Manhattan game because I believe he was there...it's hard to tell if its Gonzo because you can't see if he's wearing his court-ordered ankle bracelet...or carrying the purse he ripped off from the Short Hills Mall...
