For the past three years I have read with interest everyone's predictions of when Coach Cluess will "bolt" from the program for greener pastures. I can understand the paranoia given Iona's (and most mid major's) history of one and done coaches. However I wonder how much we know about this coach and this president. All reports in March were that Coach was leaving yet he resigned. I do not think it is as simple as getting up and going as many of us think. When coach Alford left New Mexico for UCLA I just assumed that UCLA bought out his contract. In fact that is not what happened. Alford had signed a memo of understanding with New Mexico not a new contract and he left thinking he was free and clear. UCLA paid nothing to New Mexico. New Mexico sued Alford and I don't know how that was resolved but the point is that UCLA (which has tons of money) did not buy out the contract. So are we sure that St. chicken or SH can or will buy out Coach Cluess' contract? I like to believe Coach has a good deal at Iona who brought him up from DII with a real opportunity. Some coaches actually find themselves at a mid major and make that program able to pay them what they are really worth. There are many things going on at Iona that are very positive and maybe he will just stay on this train. Our support will mean a lot in that decision.

I feel Coach Cluess realizes he has started something here at Iona. He has made real connections with his players and has enjoyed developing them on and off the Court. With President Nyre at the helm Cluess knows he has an ally. Life is short and unpredictable. The Cluess family knows that firsthand and appreciate that fact more than money. We have something special, enjoy it. Let the coaching staff know and show your appreciation by introducing others to the program. Help create the buzz. Be positive and support. Think of the possible and do not dwell on the unknowing. GO GAELS! Crush Marist!

Let's just enjoy the season and not worry about something that is completely out of our control. Coaches come and go, that is the nature of the business. Two reasons changes are made: if a program is doing good or if a program is floundering. In our case it's because we're doing good. I can deal with that. I hold no hard feelings or grudges for coaches that make changes to better their finacial situation. Everyone of us would do it if it meant improving the quality of life for our families. If the right offer comes along for Cluess and he wants to make the move, go for it, we'll survive. Now let's just watch and enjoy the season!

The point is that all this talk of loyalty to ion a and nyre is what isn't accurate.... The only loyalty cluess or anyone has is to his family and money to provide...if the big boys come with an offer that iona cannot match......he is gone

It is possible that TC is under contract. And that the contract has a buyout clause. If he wants to leave for more money and his new destination is willing to pay the buyout, then he'll be gone. Unless someone on this board is 'friends' with his lawyer/agent/accountant, then I don't believe anyone here knows. Life goes on.

Let's not forget that, by all accounts, the only reason Cluess stayed at Iona was because of an insanely high buyout clause in his contract. Cluess wanted Hofstra and Hofstra wanted Cluess. What kept him at Iona was a buyout clause that the admin wouldn't budge on. I wouldn't be surprised if he was even a bit bitter toward the school as a result. Even if you read his statement closely after his extension it was carefully worded to focus on the "next season" (singular not plural) and not too far into the future.
Look I hope we can keep him forever, don't get me wrong. But history has a way of repeating itself and if he wanted out of his contract once already there's no reason to believe he wouldn't do the same thing again. And you can't blame him or knock him for that. If it were any of us we would all stay at Iona forever, but that's because we're connected to the school. Other than the fact that Iona took a chance on him when he was an unproven commodity as a D2 coach (by an AD who's no longer with the school I should add), Cluess has no loyalty to Iona, and you can't knock him for that. It's just the way life is at the mid major level. The good news is that if Cluess ever walks we seem to have a capable protege waiting next in line in Grasso.

I hope that grasso would continue to keep the wins coming...however , more often then not , the successful coach leaves and so do the wins....(cooley leaves Fairfield and they fell apart)

I hope that grasso would continue to keep the wins coming...however , more often then not , the successful coach leaves and so do the wins....(cooley leaves Fairfield and they fell apart) Valvano left and Kennedy kept winning, Welsh left and Ruland kept winning. Willard left and we won more! The important thing is to keep Iona a revelent destination for coaches with higher aspirations, and we'll be fine. As for Cluess I've always believed and still believe he'll leave when St. John's opens up and that is probably near happening. Quite honestly the guy I'll miss is Grasso when he leaves, his recruiting is way above the norm!

Absolutely Hynes needs to be upgraded. It looks like crap on TV and if I'm the coach of Quinny, Monmouth, Fairfield, Siena, etc. first thing I'm telling a recruit is that a D1 player should play in a D1 facility and not a high school gym. Hopefully we can figure out a way to get 360 degree seating at the current facility and I think that would make a big difference.

Lets not worry too much about this at this point.
If Seton Hall or SJU dump their coaches then I think Cluess is gone. If not, I do not see Cluess leaving Iona anytime soon and the reasoning behind that has nothing to do with loyalty or the chicken wings at the Beechmont.
If Cluess does not get the tap on the shoulder from SJU or SHU then we will most likely have Grasso leave which could have a huge impact on the program. Then again, maybe Erickson will land a couple of studs and be Grasso's replacement as the assistant head coach and top recruiter.
Either way it is in God's hands and we just have to hope that whatever happens turns out to be the best decisions for those involved.

I make the motion to end all discussion on this topic. With passage of the motion all further discussion on this topic to be tabled until the end of the season. Do I have a second?
