There is a real hysteria going on nationally about coronavirus sparked by the media's sensationalism. I do believe Iona's move was warranted because of the cluster in New Rochelle. I don't remember ever seeing this kind of coverage during the Sars and Ebola outbreaks both very serious threats. So far, 18, I believe, of the 22 deaths nationwide have occurred in one nursing home in Washington State. I wish the media would concentrate on educating the public in distinguishing between routine colds and COVID-19. And giving info on means of avoiding spread of the virus. Also what can't be used safely as disinfectants now there have been runs on the usual ones. Sorry for the rant. Don't agree. I've seen plenty of non-hysterical coverage of the coronavirus, on TV and on-line. Honest coverage, not "this is all under control, nothing to see here" BS, but not sensationalism.

Also what can't be used safely as disinfectants now there have been runs on the usual ones. Sorry for the rant. I also disagree. There is significant effort to get information out despite efforts to tamp down the news and negate the risk. For example, the White House refused an advisory to seniors that they consider not taking commercial flights for now. Another example is the congressman from Florida who thought the entire dialogue is a joke. He is now in testing protocol. Let's use the ship off the coast of California as a carve out of the US. There were 3,200 people on board that ship. 22 people tested positive for the virus. On it's surface that's not too bad - right? The problem is that only 46 people were tested. What about the other 3,154? If there is hysteria, and I don't think there is; it is because 1). we do not have adequate testing, 2). we do not have adequate information about risk, 3). we do not have a sense of urgency in dealing with 1 and 2. I sure would hate to think that the Spanish Flu history may repeat itself exactly 100 years later.

Gov. Cuomo in his press conference also called it hysteria. You are right that we don't have sufficient information about the virus. I am not saying the virus isn't a real danger. But having news commentators on TV advising people to stock up on food and paper products in case of a long isolation is not judicial. That just causes panic. Entire news casts are being devoted to stories connected to the coronavirus situation.
Most viruses can't survive in temperatures of over 80 degrees. We don't know if that is the case with COVID-19. But it has been shown the virus doesn't survive for more than a few minutes on a non organic surface, according to a couple of scientists I spoke to.
The biggest problem is a lack of a curative treatment or a vaccine. But most healthy people should survive a bout with the virus. For the sick and elderly it is a different story.

No healthy 20yr olds have died in the US, sending kids early to spring break is a much better idea, there is no touching when kids go away for spring break, pools are probably a good place to be as well

The carpel tunnel syndrome is evident in your posts.

Funny post '70! I remember a spring break in the early 1960s when an epidemic broke out. Seemed like every other coed was pregnant.

I'll make sure to tell them to spend lots of time at the pool in order to reduce the risk of contamination, or is it the risk of touching? Knowledge is a wonderful thing. I now have confidence that she will survive the bout.

I will be stunned now if ncaa tourney was played in front of crowds. Think we are all going to be home for about a month to six weeks and that will start sometime in next week or two. Likely an over reaction but also the best way for this to go away quicker. Good news it looks like China and South Korea itβs now going away.
