Say what you will about Ricky he brought in above Maac level talent. No doubt about it.....
He also was signed to coach the Gaels around the same time Tobin signed three years later. Even with Covid restrictions, Pitino was able to put together an above average team.
I knew this would be a down year after three great years and losing Pitino, but losing to Marist at home is unacceptable. It was a poorly played game and poorly coached. I am afraid we are looking at another Arnold year.
Huge game tomorrow. Another loss, and this year can fall off the rails very quickly.
And that team lost by 17 at home to Morgan St.
Patience.

What is killing us this season is the upperclassmen foul shooting and yesterday their turnovers hurt us badly. I never saw so many drives to the hoop with players dribbling off their own feet or legs. We are also way too foul prone.
Right now these are the upperclassmen FT%: Treout: 63.8% Gordon: 52.1% Brown: 61.5%
You have Panzo shooting 66.7% but he never tries to create for himself or drives to the hoop, he sits out on the wing looking for open 3's. If he does not develop a step back move I am going to lose my mind.
As of today, our best foul shooters are Jeremiah Quigley (92.9%) and Jean Aranguren (81.3%).
Last years team had: Clayton: 95.3% Jenkins: 78.6 Slaz: 75% BJL: 67.6% Brookshire: 88.9% Davis: 70%
Between fouling and are inability to not capitalize on our own FT's we are losing games. I assume our fouling issue will improve as they get more experience in Tobin's trapping system. Right now we are putting opponents on the foul line at are far greater clip then we are going to the line and on top of that we are not capitalizing on our opportunities. Where Brown and Gordon are concerned, it might not get better on the line as they are both historically poor FT shooters. Tretout is a different story as he has shot over 72% for his college career. I would send them all for eye exams.
Have faith, last year FDU went 2-6 at the start of last year with far less depth than this years Iona team has. Reduce the stupid fouls, work on ball movement and capitalize on our FT's and we we will be fine.
Bottom line, for whatever reason, the guys were just a no-show. Committed 19 turnovers, majority were unforced like just dribbling off their feet and knees, while also not playing with a sense of urgency except for a couple quick possessions and the last 3 minutes.
The team really needs Terrell Williams to play up to his video and 3 years of career D1 stats. He played 25mpg scoring 8.3ppg with a line of 48/36/70. Iona needs that other offensive weapon from the perimeter. Without threes falling last night, the offense was endless forced drives to the hoop which usually ended with a turnover or bad shot. Unfortunately, the times they were fouled they missed the free throws
I think a problem that has led to THESE problems is that some guys are not looking to score at all. If Adewale and Brice are not going to even threaten to shoot/score, their bigs can just wait for our guys to drive, and with no threat inside their perimeter defenders can be more aggressive in taking away our weapons like Panzo. At least Saunders will shoot it when he's out there. Would also like to see Aranguren finish his drives the way Quigley does. I thought at least twice last night Aranguren drove into the paint, had a step on his guy, but stopped and kicked out rather than complete the drive.
Some of this is due to playing the frosh heavy minutes, which has to do with Os not being out there. I know we've all talked about Os quite a bit. It's not that he's some superstar, he's not coming in and averaging 20 per game. But he does change the dynamic on both ends just by being out there, because he is a threat to score (and is a better passer than our younger bigs) and he obviously changes our look on D a bit as well.
Bottom line, patience is a must. Yeah, we need our grads to play better, but it's not always easy when they're out there with 3 frosh on the floor, either.
Good points, especially with guys not looking to score. Aranguren only took 2 shots last night, he's a good enough offensive threat both in and out, where he needs to look to shoot and score more. I for one, very impressed with the FR class and their upside, have to remember they are only 6 games into their careers and will suffer growing pains. Can probably say the same for Brice and Gordon, big jump from JUCO to D1.
Tobin has to figure out the right rotation where he has more than just 2 threats from the outside on the court, tough with Brown, Gordon and either Adewale or Brice. That's where Os comes in.
Tobin had an interesting quote in presser...has a couple ideas to fix things...will be interesting to see what they might be vs Fairfield

Completely agree. Just one addition; cut to the basket more often. Bruce and Saunders are the only ones who do that on a regular basis.
Would like to see Joel Brown take over more. He can’t shoot for shit, but he’s our shiftiest and quickest guard outside of GG so would like him to take the ball to the cup. Free throw shooting is a giant issue though.
Also, what is the deal with getting a god damn shot clock on the stream? They didn’t have the game clock for SHU so atleast we improved there. Maybe by Hofstra we’ll have a shot clock, but no score. I’ve never seen a program win so much and not take advantage or capitalize on it. I understand it doesn’t matter to some fans, but the stream was so low major last night it was embarrassing. The whole event last night was.

To your point Sultan and Brice show minimal interest in scoring.
Also, on a side note I was enthused after the Colorado game that Jean could handle being the 3rd point behind Brown and Quigley. Not so certain now after all of the muffs and dribbles off the knee yesterday.
I think Osborn coming back might give this team the swagger they need. He’s not one to be vocal, but if his teammates plays like that while he’s on the floor/healthy he might have something to say about it
Not a big fan of “wait till Shema comes back.” Gonna have to compete and win with the guys on the floor now. Love OZ , but the players out there have to do better. If/when Shema returns will be a boost, but the play last night at home was not good. First loss at home to Marist in over 10 years.

Marist better than usual, we are a top maac team just not THE consensus MAAC team

A John Dunne coached team executing well is tough on veteran players let alone freshmen. Add the officiating last night and it was not the typical game we are going to see this year.

We can’t defend without fouling. The officials were bad, but we had at-least 3-5 bad bailout fouls with the shot clock under 10.

Officials were awful, but equally awful for both teams. Hope we never get those guys again, they helped ruin the game. Idk what they were thinking.

I'm not even saying they were bad, or they were bad only for us. I'm saying they called the game very tightly to the point that it was almost comical. There was no flow to that game. No chance to get into a rhythm.
* We've had two home games and for Tretout it was like the, "Tale of Two Cities". "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times". * And remember the great Broadway show/movie, "Annie" and the song, "Tomorrow, tomorrow, it's only a Day Away". * Somewhere up there, Gene Roberti is smiling. * And for all our poor play and poor officiating, we might still have won if only we had one more player, and I don't mean Oz, I mean Alex Bates, as I had him down for a breakout game. * And in the words of Bill Belichick, "It's on to ........".

My point was that Os does change how we look on both ends. And it's not if/when he returns. He is returning.
