We're in the MAAC. If anyone wants us to move up to a higher rated conference feel free to pony up a boatload of money.
Guys who are angry that Rick Pitino is no longer here and that Iona isn't in the Big East would do well not to watch and not troll the rest of us. The rest of us support the school and the program, come what may. If you can't do that, go root for St. John's.

The rest of us support the school and the program, come what may. If you can't do that, go root for St. John's. Not sure what prompted the frustrated post, but I agree with the main points. I've been saying all along, we're not moving up in conference. The finances are not there, the facilities are not there, and quite frankly the fan base is not there. I'm absolutely fine with being in the MAAC. Related: lots of anti-MAAC sentiment right now, and I'm sure many blame Ensor, but again, what conference with MAAC sized schools is doing sooooo much better than we are? The NCAA changes the rules every few years to try to keep more money for themselves and not let smaller schools succeed, and yet it happens anyway. Think about it. What year was it when the field went from 64 to 68? Two little schools got screwed out of the big dance, and adding two more big schools as at-larges pushes the smaller schools down the seed line too much. When that failed to keep teams like Butler from getting to the NCAA finals, they created NET, which completely favors the big schools. And still, we get a shitty little school like St Peter's making Elite Eight runs. This absolutely infuriates the NCAA. So things evolve further, hey let's allow for big schools with tons of rich donors legally hand sacks of cash to prized players because we know the smaller schools can't match that. Further, let's pretend we don't want players to transfer--of course we do, because any decent small school player is going to get yanked to a bigger school with the aforementioned sacks of cash. We're a bunch of little schools, and yet there have been flashes of greatness. Sometimes we even step in shit and a hall of fame coach stops by for a cup of coffee. But we are what we are. And Iona, at the center of this thing, somehow, some way, has managed to have absolutely amazing success for 15 years, with only a couple hiccups. And this is despite all the disadvantages of being in the MAAC that we quite frankly share with our fellow league brethren. So, yeah, when I hear some Iona fans bitching and whining, criticizing Tobin and not hearing a WORD he says in the press conferences, yeah, it annoys me, and I'd wish those folks would just shut the hell up because their delusions of grandeur about Iona are only surpassed by their own ignorance of how the college landscape is stacked against us.

Have to add the impact on recruiting and this year's roster.
Programs wanted tighter restrictions on transfers. However, as soon as HM programs had the same restrictions they wanted in place negatively impact them, they used their power and resources to have politicians file lawsuits, which quite frankly changed the rules in the middle of the game.
Like Guy posted, listen to Tobin’s pressers. More than once he has said he would have taken a couple of FDU'S returning players, but didn't because the "rules" would have made them ineligible this season.
Before any "we don't want a NEC roster" comments, let's remember the best surprises of the roster so far are FR Saunders, Quigley and Aranguren all FDU recruits who flipped to Iona.
I get the frustration over the season so far, specifically upperclassmen. I'm as guilty as any Iona fan at times. Tough final OOC games coming up, and Colgate could lead to another rough game at the HAC. I trust Tobin, and believe he will eventually turn things around. Let him sort things out vs Colgate and Harvard and see which players are going to completely buy in and push to defend the MAAC championship.

h-bill, please don’t take too long a break. While we disagree on politics, I always enjoy your posts. And, as you know, I dubbed you the Poet Laureate of the board - so we need you here. Don’t let this season’s frustrations keep you away.
Use your sense of humor - like greg, whose post in this thread is pure gold!
Go Gaels!!!

This season has pretty much sucked so far. But a big part of why is because of what we are used to. I mean Iona hasn't been this bad in 15 years. That not easy to accept. I know for me it's been really frustrating and I have to remind myself sometimes to take a breath (maybe I need to start wearing a Hawaiian shirt too during games!).
Even if this season ends with crap conf results and a quick tourney exit, things will get better because we have an Athletic office and Coach COMMITTED to winning. Look around the MAAC.. not sure you can say that about many other teams.

Look at the bright side. We could be Siena fans. They're in danger of getting run by 30 at home again tonight.
