i give both years a C. Pitino year massive disappointment not going dancing. this year a slight disappointment, but not a hall of fame coach, a coach learning with his players on the fly. easy to explain yankees win 95 games and lose in the first round they get a C pirates picked for worst in baseball but go 80-82 get a B depends what the expectations were when the season started Your hatred of Pitino is clouding your judgement. We went dancing every year under Pitino, 2 ncaa appearances. 52-16 is a massive disappointment? We beat a ranked team! Appearing in the play in game is a slight disappointment? The MAAC is a weak league. We should never finish that low. Next year is key for Tobin. Need to make it to at least to the MAAC final.

We went to the NCAAT in a year you couldn't really evaluate because teams didn't play the same number of games, or even each other during the season, there were massive disruptions to the season, and we managed to win the MAACT. The second year we had easily the best team in the league top to bottom and we didn't win a MAACT game. We didn't go "dancing." We went to the NIT and lost to a Florida team that would have rather been on the beach. The third year he delivered and sat on his hands in the second half against UConn as he was waiting for his driver to bring his car around for a trip out to Queens. But we could puff our chests out and say we had a HOF coach, so that's all that really mattered I guess. Hell the guy still lives rent free in our heads as the 120 page thread proves. He's gone; he's dead to me. Next.

And they just got a commitment. Let's keep an eye on the Siena situation and see how they do. If we want high quality recruits (not just any guy desperate to play D-1 who knows he can transfer in a year with no repercussions), unless its warranted, I don't think bashing our coach in public helps. Just my opinion. It kind of goes back to we all want the team to succeed, so what are we doing to help in that regard? It's easy to be in a funk because our HOF coach left and just piss on everything and anything. That's easy. That's the couch potato level of engagement. Agree, but this is fandom everywhere, always focusing on the negative.

Tobin got as far this year that Pitino got 2 years ago with a top 100 team. And the MAAC was bad then, too. On top of that, Rider's Baggett is like 1-100 in MAAC quarters, with the win coming over Rick because he was too stubborn to play Berrick.

This season sucked. We lost our best player not only for this run, but next year as well. Likely would’ve been MAAC POY. Tobin was average in game this year. Not once did we say to ourselves wow Tobin is playing chess while the other coach is playing checkers. He deserves a justified break because he had one returning player who was hurt the entire year, but I don’t know how you can say year two Pitino deserves a worse “grade” than this year which has been the most disappointing years in the last 15 outside of Tra Arnold

I love Coach Tobin but no matter how we slice it, going sub 500 and landing a PIG spot in the MAAC Tournament is a disappointment relative to any expectations. Pitino crapped the bed in AC in 21/22 but he had an excellent season overall which included 25+ wins, Top 50 rankings and key wins over strong OOC opponents. I don’t see how this season could be viewed as more successful than that one despite any metric we want to use.

Can we all agree that the grades are subjective and move on? People can apply any intangible they want to set the letter they feel. Also, both sides of these takes can be right. Example: yes, Pitino's quarterfinal loss season overall gets a higher grade than this Tobin season, but I felt MUCH worse losing that quarterfinal than I did Wednesday night. It's like actual grading, when you think about it, as the MAAC Tourney is the final exam. If you're an A or A+ student and then don't do well on your final, you're going to end up with a B- or whatever. If you're a C student all year and then you don't do well on your final, you're still probably a C student.

Talk about choke jobs and sitting on your hands. That was a complete embarrassment and a huge stain on the program.

That's about as relevant to this discussion as Dodgers moving to Los Angeles.

Seeing this thread had me thinking about the success other first year coaches might have had at Iona. Undoubtedly all came in with reasonably strong rosters and certainly none had to go out and assemble a team basically from scratch. Let me share what I’ve come up with. Only going back to Valvano and have not included T. Welsh’ 95/96 team, Cluess 10/11 team or the FURP 20/21 team…
Valvano 75/76 11-15 Kennedy 80/81. 15-14 Brokaw. 86/87 16-14 J. Welsh 91/92 14-15 Ruland 98/99. 16-14 Willard 07/08. 12-20 Arnold 19/20 12-17
In summary our 23/24 team at 16-17 did pretty well considering…
