Have to grade this season as an “Incomplete” IMO since it was so unique and there were various obstacles that made it challenging for Coach Tobin.
While the season was disappointing on many levels, there are several positives to take away including JQ, Aranguren, and if nothing else, identifying the types of recruits we need to focus on (and which ones to avoid) in order to thrive in our new culture under Coach.
I am really excited to see what we can build with an entire offseason to plan for and with the learnings from this past season.
How would you grade the Gaels’ season?
Go Gaels!

As you said, incomplete is fair and also hopeful.

Well if we are giving a letter grade, I'd give it a B.
For a benchmark, the Pitino season where we lost to Rider in the quarterfinals of the MAAC as a 1 seed, I'd give a B-.

Overall: C
A little below my expectations, which weren't sky high to begin with. Going in and compared to what we've been (spoiled) used to, our ceiling was probably no higher than a B+
Another way to look at it... I would give our freshmen a solid B and our grad transfers/jucos a C-

05 says that he'd give it an Incomplete. I say, "Where were you when I was struggling in the classroom"?

How could this season possibly be graded higher than a season where we were a #1 seed and had one of the best regular seasons in program history? I know we crapped the bed in AC, but it is hard to put this season ahead of that season IMO.

How could this season possibly be graded higher than a season where we were a #1 seed and had one of the best regular seasons in program history? I know we crapped the bed in AC, but it is hard to put this season ahead of that season IMO. Here's my rationale: 2021-22 Iona Hall of Fame Coach, Won 2 National Titles, Coached the Knicks & Celtics His team returned Berrick JL, Nellie JJ, Os, Parker W., and D. van Eyck from the year before Roster was the best in the MAAC and remained healthy Limited reliance on first year players in key situations Didn't win a MAACT Game 2023-24 Iona Very good College Coach Team returned 1 player who had never played for the coach The returning player who was to be a key piece of the team was injured before the season, missed a lot of time, and played injured the entire year Even if the grad transfers performed very well, would have still had to rely on first year players in key situations The coach had to navigate a looney tranfer, pay to play environment the likes of which we hadn't seen before and if you believe the former coach, was the reason he high-tailed it out of town to coach SJ's because it scared the living bejeesus out of him. Won 1 MAACT Game So while the 21-22 team won a conference title (and lost in its NIT game), it underachieved moreso than the 23-24 team, imo. Context is everything. And there has to be a benchmark. I don't know how you can grade anything in a vacuum.

We lost more games this year than the last two years combined! A record under .500 is unacceptable. The expectations every year is to make a post season tournament. We fell far short this year. Can't give it any better than a C.

Perhaps because Pitino had a much stronger roster and then crapped the bed in AC, getting outcoached by Kevin Baggett in the process? The impact of resources and expectations as compared to ultimate results. No doubt that regular season performance was infinitely better. But so were the resources (roster) and expectations.
