Other than Quigley, I can understand the others leaving due to their lack of PT. Personally, I think that Quigley, due to his slight build, is making a mistake. His level, imo, is mid-major.

We should throw them all out and recruit 13 grad kids. Then we'll just get 13 new ones every year, and won't lose anyone to the portal. Problem solved! Not a bad idea

Have to give credit to those that said the whole team was leaving. I said they wouldn't and looks like was very wrong. Hard to know if this is simply how it is now or maybe the players don't like Tobin, or a combo of the both. Nothing can be dismissed at this point. This is a hard pill to swallow. I’m surprised too, and was also wrong on the number of transfers. What can you do; if they don’t want to stay time to move on. Let’s recruit some players with better skills and a higher basketball IQ.

What a disaster! Then again they mostly all stunk so maybe starting completely over is better. And although Quigley was good, he was small and couldn't pass, but not easy to find better unless Menard is. I liked Quigley, but the CYO style dribbling into a crowd was infuriating. Not a good passer.

I hate genuinely hate to be right about this. It pains me but I saw the writing on the wall. I understand why JQ left the chance to make money is pivotal for these young men who can cash in especially since the overwhelming majority of them will not play professionally. What I do not understand is the other guys who made little to no impact who had good raw talent or skills leaving. That is concerning because thats not motivated by money but by basketball, emotion, and dynamics. It is scary that this many up and left but losing can do that to some or feeling slighted about playing time, or just fallout from what was a toxic situation with GG. All in all the school and staff MUST do a better job at retention. I also fear this is not the end of it, Sultan and Jean can still leave.

Since the useless NCAA and the courts are allowing all this NIL and Transfer shit, they might as well relax all regulations on recruiting windows, practice allowances (year round) and other sanctions which use to be well intentioned rules. The game has become a free for all so let the teams being pieced together year after year get the benefit of such allowances.

I hate to say it but the Only thing we could have done to stop this all from happening was to give Shitino the keys. Maybe it was an impossible task financially for Iona but if it was possible (LaPenta), we would be in perfect shape and likely even better. Nobody relevant would have left. Short-sighted on Iona’s part…. Probably didn’t consider the whole picture. At least we should have collected $10 million Shitino buyout and put it to NIL.

All of the Iona players entering the portal is sad, but not surprising. For me this is reminiscent of the pros kneeling for the Anthem. For the most part the owners didn't forbid it and it was within the players' rights to do it. It was also my right to never support those players, teams, or sports again. And I have exercised that right.
I hate the NIL and the fact that the NCAA is going to eventually eliminate mid-major basketball at the D-1 level. They are starting with the NIT and will move to keep mids out of the NCAAs.
I do not blame the players for wanting to make some money. However, as I view it, these players who have entered the portal are no more than "hessians" willing to fight for whoever pays them. They have no loyalty to Iona and, now, I have no loyalty to them. I wish them well, but I do not care if they end up making a million dollars or end up on the streets.
I hope that Iona basketball survives in a division other than D-1 with true student athletes. I doubt that it will happen, but that's my hope. The days of Iona basketball (and mid-major basketball) as we have known it are over.
Go Gaels!!!

Agree with that. "Once A Gael, Always A Gael" doesn't apply to those who ditch so quickly. Screw them.

While, I see your point, I have to disagree with it. For two reasons: 1. Your way, no one will be back. And that's a certainty. 2. I'm still not sure how transferring will play out in the long term. Kids might find that the grass isn't always greener. So there is always HOPE that some won't leave.

The new NCAA rules hit mid-manor hardest. But it could kill the golden goose that is the NCAA tournament. It's the dark horses that keeps the public interest in the tourney. Without that, the tournament it strictly a gambler's nest.

Well, at least I don't have to ever worry about winning an NCAA tournament game again.
