We play England on June 12, 2:30 PM. ABC. Who's in? We can make some noise here if we stay healthy.

I just want to see France take a beating and get knocked out early since they qualified in such a poor fashion. I hope they are shocked by Mexico and Uruguay. I don't think Brazil will win it. My Money is on England or Germany.

My Money is on England or Germany. Would like to see France out too, but they are good. I don't think Brazil will win either. Haven't decided who I like to win it all yet, but I think we'll get out of our Group.

If we don't get past the group stage it would be a big disappointment. Key to the England match is containing Rooney and you can get him off his game by getting under his skin. Also with Gareth Barry injured and possibly unable to play, England's midfield will be a little off their game. They have a handful of defenders who are lacking International experience.
We could catch them sleeping If Dempsey can get some pressure on the D and if Bradley plays like he did up until his suspension before the Brazil game.
Beasley's speed will be needed and I would love to see Edson Buddle be given a chance... the guy has the nose for scoring goals.

I'm a little worried about Slovenia, who apparently plays like the Gaels did a couple of years ago. Tough physical, defensive oriented team who knocked off a couple of good squads to qualify. I think they play a 4-5-1. With Barry out as it appears that's a blow for England with Cole already out. I think we can beat them. Would be nice to see us make some noise. I'm taking my son to a warm up game in three weeks v. the Czech Republic in Harftord.

I think Brazil will end up winning it. France, England, Spain are all good. Best shot we have had in a long time to advance and if we get a little luck even win an elimination game. Nobody has mentioned that it's looking like a good possibility that New Rochelle kid Edson Buddle will be named to the USA roster. Used to play for the Rough Riders and FC Westechester, now with the Galaxy. Should be on the team - after all he's named after Pele! BTW the Crew remain undefeated after a 3-2 win tonight - it was freezing out there!

gregcrow,
If you look at my last post I did mention Edson Buddle ... he deserves a chance and he is quick and can score. I like that kid. How he ever got past the Iona and St. John's scouts I'll never know. Matched up front with Donovan you would have a proven 1-2 punch. They compliment each other. Just hope he stays healthy since he has a history of injuries coming at the wrong time.
I heard that there was talk that he will be on loan to Blackburn Rovers. That will be good for him. He will be playing with Nikola Kalinic who has a great future ahead of him and he will get to train with El-Hadji Diouf, the aggressive attacker from Senegal as well as five or six players with extensive international experience.

Sorry Iona86, somehow I missed that. I agree, Rovers would be good for him. He has really grown up in the last couple of years and seems to have reached a higher level. He had some maturity issues when he was here in Columbus, but always had the potential. I still say Brazil ;D

I give you guys lots of credit. Soccer is a great game, but as much as I've tried (all my kids played youth & travel soccer, been to some college games) to get into it, it could never grab my interest enough for me to really watch/follow it... just not enough scoring and hate the not knowing how much time is left. I'll try again with the World Cup, but I believe I'll remain amongst the millions of American sports fans who are cursed by not really enjoying watching it.

That's what my European colleagues typically say about baseball. CJB, the World Cup is the "biggest" sporting event in the world. You don't have to be an expert, I'm not, just watch the US and enjoy!!!

Looks like Rooney aggrevated his groin injury yesterday v. Stoke City. England is hurting right now.

Michael Owens is hurt also... so he can not replace Rooney.

Conor Casey was left off the team. This is a joke. The guy is a proven goal scorer who's hard work draws lots of penalties. Though I am glad that Edson Buddle made the initial squad, this snub of Casey makes no sense and smells of politics. Some of the picks are coming off huge injuries and have been inactive.....

Yeah, I guess the rationale is that he hasn't been playing well in the beginning of the MLS. Davies left off too, which I think is not unexpected given his injuries. Saw an ESPN list of top 50 players in the World today, and Spain has about 6 or 7 it seems like. I have to go with them to win it. Plus my son likes Torres and Liverpool so that too.

I agree that a good argument can be made for Casey. I probably would have picked him ahead of Buddle. Bottom line is though that neither one is realistically going to see much playing time in the World Cup. I was glad to see Onyewu in the mix. I hope he is healthy and fit.- to me, outside of Donovan, he is the key to this teams success. Less than a month away! USA! USA!
