we need to TEACH defense, van gundy said you can't beat a more talented team without playing defense-- in 4 yrs we have how many wins vs teams that were better than us? and i don't mean a bad team from a higher conference? also tonight shows how stubborn our coach is, gomez should be playing!!! how come when other teams are running past us throughout the game , they don't slow it down for the last 8-10 minutes to give us chance to catch up like we do?

Beat by double digits rebounding for the second game in a row. Good to see Hynes back. He runs the floor well and seems to have a good knack for the game. I see the minutes for him improving greatly. Still haven't heard why Williams was not playing. Does anyone know.

Defense and rebounding are largely effort. Right now we look lost. I liked the energy Tavon displayed out there when he was in. Maybe time for him to start at PG again. Didn't expect us to win this game. I'm still burning over last Saturday v. St. Bonaventure. Work in progress. Right now we need to work on defense. Apart from the effort, more than a few missed assignments as guys just had wide open shots. Was thinking the same thing concerning Sledge. Maybe the team needs a shakeup to get the energy and sense of urgency again. I would like to see a starting 5 next game of Sledge, Armand, English, Laury and Hines. That lineup causes a lot of mismatches, especially in the MAAC. With a bench of Robinson, Bowman, Ellis, Williams and Gomez.

Ryden will be an important piece of the puzzle when MAAC regular season starts. He is a junkyard dog. We need another like him. Could not agree more. This team has been exposed a little last couple games. Laury having a hard time on D against big teams. he needs help. While they will not face teams like St. Bon and Dayton in MAAC, Manhattan, Canisius and Quinnipiac are going to cause problems. Just a thought but going forward I would consider starting Hines at the 5 and Laury at the 4. Laury would be impossible to cover at the PF position and hines can add some toughness and defense. I agree, split Daniel and Ryden at the 5. They have 10 fouls to give. Hopefully with playing time and effort, they learn how to stay out of foul trouble. Laury at the 4. Tavon, Sean, AJ, 1,2,3. Bowman, Gomez, Poole, Ellis off the bench depending on match ups, effort in practice, etc. Shack Scott would've helped, Amayo also. I guess will find out about IW shortly. We might be down three guys.

I pointed out in the chat room that the line up of Sledge, Gomez, AJ, Sean, and Laury played great together. I would start AJ, Armand, Bowman, Hines, and Laury. Gomez and Robinson first in off the bench. With Robinson, Ellis, and Poole picking up the 8th-10th man minutes. Mike Poole is playing himself out of games by not making good shot decisions and not consistent enough on the glass.

Sledge always brings effort. He plays hard and with a lot of heart. Had it not been for his injury I do not think he would have lost his starting job. I have said that what Sledge lacks in height, he makes up in heart. And that's not a slight on English, who scored the ball tonight. I didn't see the beginning of the game as tonight was our office Christmas party. I guess it was just as well.
Dayton is a much better team than the Bonnies. I was not surprised that we didn't pull the upset, but it wasn't as close as the 12 by which we lost. Iona needs to find some defense and rebounding. When we got it down to 6 toward the end of the first half I thought that we would get some momentum. Then a miss or a turnover got the deficit back to 9 at the half. The second half started with an easy lay in for the Flyers.
I think we can still win the MAAC, the problem is that when we play good teams like Dayton, Kansas, even the Bonnnies, we get killed in the lane. I was thinking that the way Iona played in the first 34 minutes of the Kansas game would let the Gaels know that they could play with anyone in the country. The way they came out against GMU made me really believe that. However, it seems that we have taken a bit of a step back.
Hopefully, the staff will get the boys back on track. This is a very good core of players, they just need to play up to their potential. As badly as we fans may feel, I am willing to bet that it doesn't come close to what the players feel. On to Nevada.
Go Gaels!!!

Cluess has his work cut out for him. His zone is not working. The players are back on their heels and are pretty much stationary. They don't rotate or double so it's easy for the offense to blow right by them. Laury is a great offensive player but he has no clue on defense. A zone is designed to close out the middle. Our zone is so weak it results in a layup fest. Dayton players were camped out in the short corner on the weak side for the whole game. The freshman Hines was the only one who saw it. I don't know if it is realistic to think that we are going to improve much on defense I've been waiting for four years and so far not much has happened. That said we will beat most of the MAAC teams by outscoring them. The problem will be with the better teams.

Williams may have broke a team rule. Hopefully that is it and he is just out 2 games. Ridley woke up last year after his suspension and had a great ending, maybe Williams can do the same.

We lost to a better team....plain and simple....let's move on I agree. This Dayton team could be this years VCU. They go 11 deep with minimal drop off, a nice mix of size, speed and a number of versatile small forward types. Would not be surprised to see them in the sweet 16 or deeper.
