We all would have preferred the NCAA, but what the hell, I enjoy watching this team play, especially when the offense is hitting on all cylinders. When that happens the ball movement is beautiful to watch. Let's hope for a run in the NIT.

+1 Let the Bumb rant. So much of a Sienna fan who are more proud of their arena than their team. Suck a hairy pair WP. why does it have to be hairy? So you are not opposed to the pair, just the hair? Lol

Kind of surprised that AJ English seems to be getting a pass for the way he played last night. First team all MAAC players can't be as passive as he was. Until Manhattan let him get to the basket for 2 late relatively uncontested drives he gave up his dribble much too soon most of the night. I think part of the reason DL had to bring the ball up so much was English's reluctance to do so. And the last possession highlighted what he had been doing all game. He took a few dribbles and then instead of attacking pressure he picked up his dribble and gave up the ball to a player that hadn't made a 3 all year. There were other factors in the loss but his performance the last 2 games was more the bad AJ that sometimes rears its head then the good AJ that made all conference. I also thought he was somewhat lackadaisical on D. I love his potential as a player but this was not a good tournament for him.

ny2nc, your observations are correct. Manhattan changed the way AJ has typically played. He lost his swagger and outside shot. Based on what we saw this year I expect team's to pressure us at least 3/4 court as it takes away our rhythm offensively. David Laury handling the ball tends to stagnate the offense as others stand around not sure where to move to. I liked David in high post where we had the option of pick and roll or distribute to corners. I know Coach Cluess will make adjustments for next year. But I think we give AJ credit for playing the point the way he did over the season remembering it is not his natural position.

Long flight home today. Jet Blue TV had a rerun of game on ESPNU which I picked up with the score 44-45 (or thereabouts). I never go back to look at a game, but decided to watch the finale. Couple of observations: --The missing play at the 2:00 mark alluded to earlier in this thread was indeed Sean's NBA+ range 3 point shot on which he was clearly hit on the elbow. Cluess and staff complained. (Immediately after that, some of us got all over the ref who was on the far side of the court during the shot. He responded that "it was not my call.") Result was the ball going out of bounds to Manhattan. --DL put up a shot which went half way down and came out, resulting in fts only. --Not sure about the timeout at 1:12 after the Bowman 2 pointer made it 68-64. (Probably needed to explain that we only had 3 fouls at that time and would need to foul quickly to get them into the bonus.) We still had only 4 fouls @ 1:03. --Took too long to get them into the bonus, losing valuable time-- about 15 seconds between each foul. --Question the timeout at 17.8 after the AJ drive and dunk closed it to 2. --Last play speaks for itself with no game plan to free somebody for the shot as well as AJ picking up his dribble too early.Would have loved to have had a timeout there. --What was not evident at the game (we were directly behind the Iona bench and players blocked us out quite often) was that we really had them rattled in the last few minutes.
Others: Got a bad break with the jump ball at the 0.07 mark at the end of the half. (Thought IW got hammered on the final play.) Result was Jaspers getting the ball to start the second half not us. DL clearly worn out banging bodies with Pankey & Brown, bringing the ball up the court, and doing a decent job on the boards.
Hope to see them playing well in the NIT.

I don't mind having DL as a safety valve, but we overused him as a "point forward." Have been saying all year--mostly in the chat room--that I thought we diminished AJ's value to the team by forcing him to play the point. You are very aware of the pressures that present themselves to pgs. We need a quick, bold, aggressive pg to run this offense. I'm confident that TC and company are already working on this. I am also hoping that Sledge works hard to get out of the doghouse.

Guy, I know that WP did some good work for you on setting up the board, or at least I think he did, but ask him to take his crap to the MAAC Board where it belongs. Not like it's funny, and he's just trying to do his Soup, punk impersonation. Keep this as a BB board.

#1 reason we lost the game-IW got two fouls too early in first half. If he stays out of foul trouble we likely win.

I am also hoping that Sledge works hard to get out of the doghouse. DL was bringing up the ball against the press because he was the best option not to cough it up. Given everything else we need him to do, it clearly wore DL out. Like you, I'm sure the coaching staff will be working on other options for next year, and a Sledge resurgence would be great. And when AJ comes back as a junior, I bet his handle/confidence against pressure D will be greatly improved. AJ works very hard and will improve this part of his game.

Just a couple of random thoughts about the game
Anyone else think they saw Mass call Kates an Effin P_ _ SY on Nat'l TV late in the game? Mike Rice moment.
I'm glad we didn't panic down 10 in the second half of an elimination game, but DL doing a Curly Neal impression was just too casual.
Fatigue seems to be mentioned as a factor regarding our performance, but when I mentioned fatigue and a longer bench a couple of weeks ago I was ridiculed and suffered emotional trauma.
I'm thinking that a offensive oriented team with a bunch of finesse players is at a disadvantage in a one game, pressure situation like a championship game. Its easier to perform on the defensive side with all the adrenaline and anxiety flowing. You can channel that more easily into what you have to do. You have to work against it when trying to finesse things.

ctbill, hope I wasn't one of the posters who ridiculed you. I think that during the season when you play Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday then fatigue isn't a factor. But in a tourney and playing on three consecutive days it is a factor. Now if we had played Manhattan in the semi's and Canisius in the finals, then it wouldn't have mattered as much, since Canisius also has a short bench.

The pain is beginning to wear off a little and I'm now looking forward to finding out our NIT opponent.
In looking back at that championship game the most prominent memory I'll have is 4 very good shooters all having a bad night at the same time. For a team that relies so heavily on making perimeter shots it's a killer.
