From ESPN stats: A.J. English had 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Iona in Friday's one-point victory over Niagara. It is the fifth game in which English has had at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists, the most such games in Division I.
I am not a troll. And you are not a very good reader. I said he was a good coach. I'll go slow: Good - means good. definitely not bad. Very good - better than good. Great - Excellent, special. I said the team did not look well coached. Do you think they look well coached on defense? Do you think they look well coached coming out of a timeout? OK, Maybe you do. That is fine. I don't. But that is one man's opinion. But do I think Cluess is a good coach? Yes, I do, He is a very good recruiter and a very good offensive coach. In some situations his team does not look "well-coached" - or at least I think so. Doesn't mean I think he is a "bad" coach. I think He is overall good, or very good for Iona. He will one day leave for greener pastures. And I will feel bad that he is gone. I don't know why thinking he is a good coach but commenting on what I see as his or the team's weaknesses is talking out of both sides of my mouth. My nephew is a good baseball player. My nephew Is not a good base runner. I don't think the two statements are mutually exclusive.
I just don't get why these comments are often about the poster, not the opinion being posted. In other words, on this one: please tell me why you think Cluess is a great or good defensive coach. Why you think they look well-coached. And also why you think Iona had good plays being run after timeouts, Address that, not why you think I am a jerk.
You've posted in 4 threads on this board, George Mason Game, Umass Game, Canisius Game and Niagara game, nowhere indicating you think Cluess is a good coach. Take your agenda elsewhere!
The infidel has been banished from the kingdom! No agenda. Just an opinion: Iona should play better D. Or really play the good D they do display for longer periods of time. As for Cluess, I'll say it again - he is a good coach. I will be sorry to see him go someday. Iona bball will be worse as a result of it. It's like Tom Coughlin. The Giants' D was horrible this year. But I am glad Couhhlin is coming back. He is a good coach. Look,I made the mistake of posting some critical stuff. First to provoke debate, second out of frustration with bad games. I should not pick up the phone when they lose. So you guys see me as a nitpicking whiner. That's on me. I'm done. I'll behave (or at least try to). Just want them to win. And I hope IW has the opportunity to be part of that.

Definitely stay, 1970 shouldn't be the only person here who can't stand prosperity,
So many variables go into a game's result, only one of which is whether the team is actually prepared to play.
Maybe the team didn't look "well coached" because it was their first game without the most complete player on the roster.
Maybe our defense looks like garbage because the system is geared to light you the fuck up. If Iona tried to add more consistent defense, the offense would be less consistent. This is the system. The only schools that can kick your ass both offensively and defensively are all in the AP top 10.
My gripe with all of this--and not just Benviky--is that many fans are getting awfully nit-picky out here, actually complaining about the style of victory. Would you rather be Niagara, sitting at 3-16 and really just waiting for the offseason to get here? Or how about Siena, whose fans had hopes and dreams of NCAAs and instead are losing by 35 to Canisius?
Guess what? We're not a perfect team, and we're going to have ups and downs, even in a crappy MAAC, because that's what happens to every fucking team in the country in league play. Sometimes you're gonna pull a win out of your ass against a 3-15 team. Other times, we're going to steamroll someone.
We don't know the situation with IW, but without him we're still the best team in the league. We have some work to do to prove it, though. Just find ways to keep winning--the margin is meaningless. Yeah, some of you are thinking that's not true, we have to paste people so our Pomeroy and Sagarin go through the roof, but that won't happen with this schedule--and the committee still uses RPI primarily anyway. Just win the games, win as many as possible. And hopefully IW will be back in time for Albany. And then we'll see what happens.
Guy, it wasn't the style of victory that got me upset. It was the near complete confusion shown by the team and staff for most of the last few minutes of the game. At this point I expected them to be past that, with or without IW.
I'm going to assume that the team and staff just had one of those screwed up days that all of us have at work sometimes.
Except no one dissects my performance on a message board!
Let's hope the team puts all this behind them and comes out very disciplined today against Canisius.
Here's the thing about last nights game. Our defense held Niagara to 39.7% shooting, 26.7% from 3. We out rebounded them by 1. The thing that really hurt us was that we turned the ball over 15 times, with AJ leading the way. We need to take care of the ball better. As I said, Sed had a great line, 13pts, 5 assists, 3 steals, 0 turn overs.
Great point about turning the ball over. way too many careless and unforced turnovers. Looking at the stats AJ and DL have to take care of the ball better. In MAAC play AJ is averaging 4 TO'S a game while DL is at 3/game. Interesting stat also was while Casimir's scoring and shooting have come down slightly in league games, he has 20 assists and only 5 TO'S in 7 MAAC games. pretty impressive for a freshman, especially when he is also needed to knock down perimeter shots. let's hope that continues. Also will need Dublin to step up and help replace the 7 rebounds that IW had per game. I know it's a small sample size, but Dublin is shooting a ridiculous 72% (17-22).
bill and sharkey, I agree with this. Turnovers have hurt us. Witness the Geo. Mason game loss and almost Niagara.
It has always been TC's MO to just outscore opponents. We do it with our fire power. Defense has always been secondary. I think that our defense has gotten better, but can improve more. But under TC, the primary concern of the Iona team is offense. A big part of this is taking care of the ball. We need to cut down on silly turnovers. But I'll take this kind of team over a KW's vision for the Gaels any day of the week.

Yes, please stay. We've been yelling at 1970, and for that matter, Guy for years. And nothing is more fun than when Guy and 1970 get into it! Hoops - you can go.

AJ and DL played 40 minutes and 38 minutes respectively. AJ was the primary ball handler and DL handled the ball a ton as well. They are going to turn the ball over. Maybe a couple more times than they should.

Do we get into it that often? I kinda feel like we are normally in agreement.
The greatest poster in the history of the MAAC as determined by THREE separate polls.

I didn't say often, but when you do it's funny. Especially when you threaten to throw him off the board. Or were you talking about me? Also correct, we mostly agree. Again, not often, but the delusional thing was fun! Anyway, I was just trying to make a point. No reason to leave just because people disagree.

Yes, and we'll all be drinking Kool-aid from the cult of Cluess if it comes under his watch!
