Cluess is a 3 pt genius, a great offensive coach and excellent at finding players, he is also a bad defensive coach and a terrible out of time out coach. I think he is good at knowing who to put on the floor, tonight he did have an overall bad night. I don't think we are in the " Cluess cult" but I do think we all know he is a consistent winner and probably the best case long term situation we can have here, so I'll take him.
I also think you are out of your mind if you think not having IW doesn't matter. We were 1-4 without him last year and we will have trouble winning without him this year, he is the gel of the team and makes up for The rest of the teams defensive weakness, he is also one of the best 3 point shooters in the country and with him teams don't know who to focus on.
Again just have to hope he isn't that hurt.
Just to clarify: I may be out of my mind independent of this madness, but I believe Isaiah Williams is a HUGE part of this team. On both ends of the floor - probably my favorite player. Iona is going nowhere without him. The point I was trying to make is that I think the Gaels have enough talent to beat Niagara handily with him out of the lineup. Maybe I am in the minority, but I think this team should be able to NOT get scared by Niagara (in 2015) whether or not IW is contributing.
It's stupid though to think we will have our A game for every game.

Whoah! Touched the nerve of an acolyte! That record may be impressive for his résumé, but they play in a weak league. And I don't think many people scrolling around this board are looking for winning percentages and regular season championships. In the MAAC there is only one reliable path to the NCAA's: winning that tournament. What is his record there? Many of us think his skill and effort at recruiting has produced the most talented team in the MAAC over the past few years. That is a very positive thing, one that keeps me interested in the team - even to the point of debating people that trot out meaningless statistics and insults vs. defending the points being made. And I am not a Cluess-basher. In the big picture we Iona fans are lucky to have him as our coach making Iona basketball relevant. But come on - there are some troubling aspects of the team that don't seem to change. Defense. Timeouts. Players zoning-out on straightforward actions. Do you not see that? And by the way: I want to be wrong. I want to be shut up. But not by baseless insults. By our team's performance - Dominate the MAAC!
So you expect us to blow everyone out, then?

Last year we stole a similar game at Niagara as this year when AJ hit a 3 off a broken play. Niagara finished 7-27 last year. We didn't panic last year, shouldn't this year. Real concerns are atrocious interior defense and IW's health. Must stop average guards from getting into lane so easily and looking like tony parker as things will get tougher in march
benviky welcome. yes some here have joe paterno syndrome, you can't be an iona fan and say cluess isn't the best thing since slice bread, i like the cult reference. guy, happy we won and didn't expect a blowout w/o iw, but when we are up double digits against a bad team (3 wins) in front of 500 people on espn, i would think we should be able to stay focused. coming out of the last 2 to's, aj passed to no one and we only had 4 guys on the floor( that was a bad call should have been a T), do guys not know their names when in the huddle? were they focused in the last minute of a tight game? but i will take any win without our glue after the results we had without him last year.

No, I do not expect them to blow everyone out. I would certainly like to see that, but it is not realistic. And I understand that every team is going to have down nights. My perspective is that the Gaels seem to have more than their fair share of them, if not an entire game than certainly for large chunks of games when they look clueless. I have seen how good they can be, so I believe they are capable of blowing everyone in the MAAC out. I watch games like this and I think "down night, but they'll get out fine." Then I watch the end of the game and I just sit there and cringe. Yes, they got out of there with a W. However, the end of this game was ugly - in so many ways.
Lastly, I do not think that I have insulted anyone on this board. It certainly has not been my intent. Yet my posts have been met with responses that accused me of offering opinions that were dumb, stupid and indicative of being out of my mind. Those are the words used. I really do not understand that. If other posters have differing viewpoints, they should post those opinions. Not insults. I feel like I am arguing politics with a liberal. (O.K., I know that now I have insulted some of you - LOL).

No its a good thing to have many differing opinions. I welcome that myself. I love Cluess but like all coaches he has his flaws. Guy fights the good fight trying to keep the fan base grounded and expectations in check. After all this is a mid-major program and some guys think we should go into Dayton as a 15 seed and knock off 2 seed Ohio State. Welcome.
It was a gift that the Niagara player toppled over, but make no mistake, the foul call was correct and NOT a gift in that regard. And AJ, who's been shaky at times, still had to make the FTs.
Awful last 3-4 minutes and meh second half on the whole, but it's the road in league play. It happens. We lose this game in most Cluess years. Good sign when you look at it that way.
RPI dipped a little. Have to wait to later/tomorrow to see how far the Pomeroy fall is.

I don't expect to win every game either. Actually, it's very rare for me to get upset by a road loss to a conference opponent.
Just too many mental errors the last two minutes. Why play stupid and help your opponent try and beat you?
If you're going to lose, at least let it happen playing your "A" game.
The frustration being vented here is because this team with or without IW, is better than that.
I know you feel that some of us are being over-critical. I know it is just one game, but which of the following do you agree/disagree with?
1) Even though we were away, Niagara is a bad team that we should have beaten fairly easily. 2) No one stepped up (off the bench) in IW's absence. 3) Hines looked slow and lost on the court. 4) Amayo played out of control (usual) for parts of the game. 5) DL3 was great offensively but took too many threes and did not go up strong at times. 6) We got most of the ref calls that were questionable. Unusual for being on the road. I am not talking about the last play where AJ was fouled. 7) The 4 guys on the court with many coaches on the bench to monitor the situation was inexcusable.

Staff has to keep its cool down the stretch. Imperative. A bunch of 40-50 year old guys have to keep their cool and have the situation in hand. Guess what? We may lose. Keep your cool.
I looked up the rule on this as Niagara was calling for a technical foul for our having only 4 men on the floor. Under the 2010 rules this is correct:
Rule 10
Art. 7. (Men) Failure to have all players return to the playing court at approximately the same time following a timeout or intermission. PENALTY: (Art. 6 and 7) Two free throws awarded to the offended team. The ball shall be put back in play at the point of interruption.
The 2013 rules deleted this provision.
If I recall correctly, we only had 4 players on the floor when time was called in on our last possession. We were down 1. Had the old rule been in effect, NU would have been awarded free throws and could have gone up 3 with 8.6 seconds left. The foul on AJ would have only given him 2 shots. That would have been a horrible way to lose.
While I thought that there were a lot of bad calls (and no calls)the refs got that one correct by not assessing a technical.
Hopefully, we regroup and bring a better effort to Canisius. When we have a team down we need to step on their necks.

What? These are just comments. I don't see anyone out on the ledge.
