Same thing if you had Grimes today.... Like I said he was better than most NBA PG's. Ask any of the old timers... they will tell you it is a toss up. Ok, why didnt Grimes make it? It will be along time before we see a combo of the likes of Machado and Momo

It will be along time before we see a combo of the likes of Machado and Momo Mid Majors did not get the press they do today since the media is very different. There was noBlogs with certain sports writers pushing players. He was also 5'8". When you think of the perfect PG you would take Rory Grimes and give him five inches and 30lbs. That Iona team and the NY media was praying for a first round Iona SJU matchup because Iona more than matched up with that St. John's team. The NBA had 23 teams back then... not 30, and no development league. Less opportunities as well. Here is my question....did you see Grimes play?

Well you have our opinions. Check with some of the other guys on the board who were old enough to see Grimes play. Maybe they will have different opinions but I doubt it. With that said ... guys like Rory or Scott seem to only come around every 30 years or so.... lets enjoy Scott while we have him.

Ludicrous to put Momo in the same category as Burtt... we will see if MOMO is drafted and plays in the NBA. There are good arguments between Grimes and Machado but Iona 86's passage says it all.

Tough choice on the point guard, although Rory never whined like Scott does. I would absolutely pick Burtt over Momo--no question.
My choice however, would be Vickers and Hamilton (pre-3 point fg era) both of whom went to the NCAAs twice, won a game in the NCAA, and lost 2 heartbreakers (one to eventual Final Four Penn when Dave Brown was injured and one to Georgetown on a missed last shot. I honestly believe they had a path to the Final Four had they won that game.) I believe both of them were drafted by the NBA.
They also gave me the most satisfying win, knocking off SJU easily in the then ECAC final game at Nassau Coliseum. The overall national schedule played at that time would put our recent schedules to shame. (I'm not knocking the recent schedules--I know things are very different now.) In the regular season we played:Texas A&M, Long Beach St, Kentucky, St Mary's, San Francisco, Air Force, St Bonaventure, Georgetown, Wichita St, UAB, Pitt, Kansas, Louisville, Holy Cross + the locals.

Hamilton was drafted 4th round (1980) by the Boston Celtics ...Vickers was undrafted. Vickers was quick but had no range on his jumper and was slow north-south on the court. Good arguments with Vickers/Hamiton & Grimes/Burtt backcourts but the latter was clearly more talented.

After I graduated from Iona in 1973 and moved to D.C., I did not have the opportunity to see many Iona games. It is the beauty of the internet age that I get to see/listen the Gaels play a lot.
I did get to see them play Virginia in the heartbreaker in the Meadowlands and read about Steve Burtt all that season. That team had the talent to go a couple of rounds in the tourney.
But when talking about Iona backcourts, the Burtt, Jr., Solver, and McCoulough tandem was top 10 in the country during the '05-'06 season. I often wonder how much further Marvin would have progressed had we not had Williams (DeCancer) on the squad.
Go Gaels!!!

There is no way that Grimes could have played in the NBA. Great MAAC player, but to say he was better han alf the point guards in the NBA is just wrong. Burtt Jr. couldn't do it. Scott will have trouble making it. It is a completely different level of ply. No way!

Rory played for the great Riverside church teams of the 80's.... he more than held his own and in many cases outplayed future pros like Mark Jackson. The only things separating Rory Grimes and Mark Jackson was five or six inches and the fact that Jackson had huge pushes from the NY media because he played for SJU.
If the league was down to 23 teams, no development league and Scott was 5'8"... he would not have a chance at being drafted.
Scott has the size and strength to play pros. He has shown a big improvement in a year and the scouts think he has more potential to develop. That is why scott is on the radar right now.
Grimes played a much tougher schedule than Scott ever saw.
One question.... if you had to have one of them running your offense with the game on the line.... who would you want.... Grimes or Scott? I would take Grimes.... but it is a close call.

Different era's make it difficult to compare Scott to Grimes, but there's no doubt in my mind your not insulting anyone if you think Machado is the best point guard to play at Iona.

Close call indeed; but I'll go with Machado.

Super, you brought back so many great memories. The Vickers, Hamilton, Ruland, Palma, Brown, Vescey team could have easily been a Final Four team (ask Denny Crum and eventual champion Louiseville)..Grimes & Machado both have a great "not afraid of anybody" attitudes. I think Grimes has a very slight edge over Scott. Steve Burtt Sr was the most explosive scorer Iona has every had. If you were lucky enough to see him elevate and dunk over bigger guys, it would take you breath away. I think Grimes/ Burtt has a edge, but time will tell..It ain't over yet!
