This year Purdue.... Purdue, Maryland, St. Joe's, Denver, Marshall. Richmond. With Maryland and Richmond not having their best years and Denver seems to be struggling now..

85- 86- NC - featuring Bucknall, Daugherty, Lebo, Wolf, Popson and Kenny Smith. Knocked out in 3rd Round NCAA's by Louisville. Louisville - Billy Thompson, Milt Wagner, Kenny Payne and Pervis Ellison. National Champion Florida featuring Vernon Maxwell and Clifford Lett. UNLV- NCAA team lost West Regional final featuring Armen Gilliam, Anthony Jones, Mark Wade. Louisiana Tech - Featuring Randy White Duquesne St. Bonaventure Marist - NCAA team featuring Smits
The only team that sucked in the MAAC was Manhattan who only won 2 games.
Only year I see as being weaker than this years schedule was 84/85. That year we were very much like this years team where lots of people avoided us. But lets be real... Purdue and Marshall do not compare to playing some of the competition we scheduled back then.
Iona86, thanks for saving me the time doing the research on this. As I said in an earlier post, times are different now--with the Big conferences. It's definitely more difficult to schedule "up" when you have a good team. That's why the schedules from 78 to 86 were so daunting.
Iona 86 ... like your three wishes but even if Iona had a healthy Bob Coleman in 84-85 and defeated Loyola-Chicago in the first round the next opponent was .......... Georgetown led by Patrick EWing! NOTHING MORE TO SAY!!!!

I think you are off on your years. Burtt's first season was 1980-81. I believe they played Tennessee and Illinois in a tournament down south. I also think they played NC State at MSG that year, but I am not 100% sure.
However, your point that the Burtt/Grimes teams played tougher schedules than this year's team is absolutely valid.
BTW, I believe Burtt outscored Byron Scott something like 29 to 8. He also badly outscored Doc Rivers in at least one of those games.
IIRC, he scored about 15 against Jordan, but Jordan only had about 16. Jordan was in a terrible slump at the time, but exploded in the 2nd half of the year. I also remember two Tarheels (Kenny Smith and Sam Perkins, I believe) received symbolic benchings for about the first two minutes of the game, so showing up late for a pratice or team meeting.
The two things I remember most about the NC State game were an Iona fan yelling at Valvano, "Deserters are shot at dawn, Jimmy!" (does anyone here want to take credit?) and the following exchange between two little girls, sitting in front of us with their NC State fan, Dad.

Correct, Burtt and Springer were gone by the time the 84-85 team played Loyola-Chi in the NCAA tourney. Their last shot was Virginia. Grimes, Truesdale, Coleman, and Hargraves were a year behind Burtt and Springer.

Thank you CTbill and my apologies for the memory lapse. Yes Coleman would have made a huge difference in th 1984 game against Virginia.. Coleman played in the Loyola-Illinois game and had 16 rebounds. A heartbreaker with Tony Hargraves missing the game tying FT an Iona having to foul.
This year Purdue.... Purdue, Maryland, St. Joe's, Denver, Marshall. Richmond. With Maryland and Richmond not having their best years and Denver seems to be struggling now..

You are correct... too much Plum wine too late at night. ;D
We played an even tougher schedule in 80-81: Vanderbilt South Carolina Tennessee Illinois North Carolina State Wichita State Kansas St. Bonaventure Louisville

Wow! I think we were expecting to have a certain AA center for his senior year when that schedule was made. :)

Yeesh. Alfredrick "The Great" Hughes of the Loyola Ramblers. No matter what we did (double and triple teaming) that game everything he threw up found the bottom of the net. The guy just made one incredible shot after another. Was a first round NBA pick and only played one season.
Hey Momo & Scott: Hope you read Lunardi and are prepared to respond on the court for the rest of the season. In case you missed it, after this board compared you to the all time Iona greats, Lunardi said: "Joe Lunardi (4:17 PM) Love to watch Iona score. Love to watch teams score on Iona. You get the idea, Matt. Some nights, Machado and Momo are the leading scorers for both teams
We await your response!
Super this is a real good idea. Momo and Scott have to get wind of this comment. They both can play d if they want. I think this comment can only help us.

Yeah Hughes was excellent... he did a good job guarding a much larger Coleman. In fact I do not think Coleman scored after Hughes switched to guard him. The great Andre Battle of Yonkers had 15 points that game.

Yeah! Another heartbreaker NCAA loss--at the foul line with the great Tony Hargraves missing!
Coleman was hurt for the Virginia game in 84, and Troy Truesdale had to match up with Olden Polynice. Troy at 6'7" played the 6'11" Polynice tough. Both were teammates at All Hallows as I recall.
Iona86, if Truesdale were 5 to 6 inches taller, he would have been taller than Polynice and we would have won. ;D ;D ;D

Yes, and if I were 5 or 6 inches taller I would be taller then Glover.
