I've been watching Valpo tonight. Very solid defensively, but they play man--will be interesting to see how they play us. Their offense is streaky, some good sets and some shaky plays. IPFW hanging around, down 5 with 9:45 left. Two schools of logic here. One, Valpo will have had a game to work out some kinks while Sunday is Iona's first game. Two, Valpo may not be in great shape early and just a day's rest for a high-tempo team could be key; further, Iona has an actual scouting report while Valpo does not. So, I expect Valpo to get off to a good start against us, maybe even go up double figures, and then Iona surges in the second half. Play @ URI Tuesday--possible look ahead.

Given that they are struggling with IPFW, I'm thinking they won't look past us Sunday.

Valpo has gotten every call, from what I've seen. Ton of FTs. And they still haven't pulled away.

Watched most of second half. Not that impressed with Valpo. Lots of calls went their way. Peters is one hell of a player though. They are ripe to be picked off. Go Gaels!!!

Yes. I can't say they are better than we are. They may beat us, but being at home helps that cause too.

Agree with gael4life, about Alec Peters. Our game looks like a contest between speed and muscle. I'm not sure if it's style (attack the basket) or HC advantage, but Valpo had a 38 to 15 advantage from the foul line, making 25 to nine. It's definitely a game that we can win, but I'm sure we'll be an underdog.

Valpo has gotten every call, from what I've seen. Ton of FTs. And they still haven't pulled away. Valpo was called for 14 fouls (only 4 in the first half), to IPFW's 27 fouls. Valpo went to the line 38 times (shooting 66 percent), compared to just 14 for IPFW. Valpo pulled down 11 offensive boards and did a nice job on 2nd chance points. They looked uneven on offense, relying on defense, 10 steals and 4 blocks. I live 15 miles from Valpo, so I'm familiar with them. Consistently among the best in the Horizon; lots of talent back this year. I think the game tomorrow is a toss-up but Valpo should be favored by about 3 or 4. Iona will struggle to get good looks, but I'm not sure how athletic Valpo is or how deep they can go. They did not look better than Iona last night, but at least they got a tune up.

Valpo can be beaten, but tough at home....They scored 16 more foul shots last night then their opponents....That is hard to overcome...IMO...Key to victory.....Have a 40% or close to it 3 point shooting percent game.....
Heard that Cluess was just going through careful motion during the Princeton exhibition game and wanted to avoid any further minor injuries or aggravating those recently healed...
My guess....Point..........Amayo Guard..........Casimir Guard..........English Forward........Williams Center.........Washington
Game on ESPN3 Sunday 2:30 PM...For those intending to LISTEN, make sure you have renewewed your contract with Iona...

Oh geez here we go. We saw them last night. They looked rusty, didn't have scary athleticism or size, yada Yoda. Playing their first game. This is a veteran team who will adjust to what we throw at them. If they can control the boards and the tempo they can frustrate us quite a bit. We'll do what we do. They will be fundamentally sound. We'll need several new guys to play seamlessly and adjust to whatever changes they throw at us. If we win, it'll be a great win.

Valpo might not have been at their best last night, but they are a very good team. A win against Valpo tomorrow just might be the biggest win since TC took over. They are better than the poor Wake Forest and Maryland teams Iona has beaten. Just saw on twitter that URI'S EC Matthews will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Valpo may turn out to be the best team on Iona's schedule. Wish this game was a little later on in the OOC schedule, but this would be a very big game if Iona can pull off the upset.

A friend who bets, tells me that Valpo opened at -7 and is now at -6 1/2.
