Did our players forget how to play? I doubt that. The strength of this team was defence and depth. This is what Willard taught and it was how the team played and won. Cluess has a different style of play. He likes a fast pace and uses less players. The guys we have now are not well suited to that style of play. If Cluess is smart ( and everyone said he is ) then he will adapt play to what the team does best. If not we could be in for some tough times. I have to belive this guy will realize what has to be done.

Just got Back from a lost weekend in Cleveland. Should have gone to the Jets game, looked like a good one. I will write more later, but I have run out of excuses. Today's game is inexplicable. Reminds me a little of Rich Rodriguez who took a bunch of players who were recruited to play a system and tried to force feed them a completely different system. They were not built to play that way. Good coaches adjust systems to the talent not the other way around. I do not miss Willard. I do miss Jeff.

I just woke up and realized it was not a dream. We actually lost to Bryant! 0-3 to start, imagine if you were told that a week ago.
I went from loving the Cluess hire to hating it in one day, you have to believe this is his and his staffs fault. Willard never really wanted to be here for long so good riddance, and thanks for booking this ridiculous tournament.
I agree we didn't realize enough what a loyal guy and a winner we had in Ruland.

I was in Trenton today for Pop Warner Eastern regional cheer championships at Sun Bank Arena. My daughter's team wins and advances to the National Championships at the Milk House in Disney. I was so sure of an Iona win I never even checked for a score. I get home, log onto the board and see this, needless to say I'm shocked. Forgive me for asking, but what the hell happened? I was a little reserved with all the new players and coaching staff; but I would have never predicted this. Crazy thing is, I still think they'll be alright by seasons end, can't give you a reason why, just a gut feeling. Keep the faith!

Lets see what emerges from this perfect storm they hit in Cleveland.
How this team and its coaches respond will tell us just what they're made of.
Very disappointing, but there's too much talent to be throwing in the towel.
Coaches have their work cut out for them.

I don't like the short bench program at all. There's going to be unhappy kids.

All I can say is that I am stunned. I was not happy with the way that the Gaels started this tourney and now this? Losing to Bryant is just terrible. Granted, injuries have hurt our depth but still, there'e enough talent to have emabled us to get out of Cleveland w/two wins. New coach, new system, same old problems. We MUST hit FT's to win tight games. We always seem to be the one getting beat at the buzzer. UGH, Lucy just pulled the football away and I'm flat on my back. Well, there is nowhere to go but up.

ghostofwillard, a recap of the end of the game, from looking at the box. With about 20 seconds left and Iona up 72-68, Alejo fouls out by fouling on a three point shot. Needless to say, Bryant makes all three. Score is now 72-71, Iona. We put the ball in our other senior's hands and he's fouled. Naturally, he clanks both. They hit a three (Ralphael Jordan) and it's game over. The kid who hit the shot was 3-3 from deep, so you can't say it was a fluke.

By Thursday I'll be over this and will be psyched for our home opener, as I'm sure EVERYONE else who reads this will be, or else you wouldn't be reading this. And I'm going to make a suggestion to TC (knowing full well he probably won't take it), but it makes me feel better, part of my healing process. Here it is: Don't start Jermel. And I know he's been a double digit scorer in all three games. By bringing him off the bench (Sean starts), we have a definite scoring punch off the bench, but more importantly we have a taller defender (SA) who might be tougher for opponents to shoot over. I think a backcourt of Scott and Jermel is too short, and believe me I know short. JMO.

Thanks IC59, I know some of you must of thought I was nuts when I posted it the first time but I'll just do it once here. You gotta make your Free throws!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they did this very simple thing they'd be coming back at 2-1 and everyone's outlook would be entirely different. That said maybe this isn't the worst thing that happened. Lots of weaknesses get exposed; plenty of time to address them. Big question is can they be corrected? Three days into the season and it's gut check time, we'll soon learn what this team is made of!

Just to make our weekend complete - the soccer team lost in the MAAC finals to St. Peters. There is hope though, the Cross Country team competes for the National Championship on November 22. They are 4th ranked and there is no clear cut favorite this year. Go Gaels!

Back. Needed some time away from the web. I owe apologies to IC59, OT and anyone else I mocked for being on the ledge after Cleveland State. Appears the ledge is far more crowded now.
Anyway, you won't see me humping Iona hoops any more. Apparently "GuyF" and "smack" don't mix well and never have. At this point hoping we can at least figure some stuff out so Richmond doesn't beat us by 30.

Like the Old saying goes, your never as good as you look sometimes, and your never as bad as you look either. Things will improve. But I'll tell you Cluess has his work cut out for him.

I'm getting real comfortable with the notion that the coaching staff needs greater cohesion and discipline before we can expect it from the players. In game feed-back needs to come through the head coach to the players. Take a little lesson from Tony B., who huddles with his coaches before he huddles with his players. Maybe it's an Italian thing , but Tony, Rick P, et al are the only ones stomping their feet with the rolled up program during the game. (Before all you Italians get pissed at this Irishman, I am married to one of yours. She is the one wandering the sidelines during show time in my house. )
