Does anyone know the actual terms of the buyout agreement or are we discussing rumors? $10 million buyout with a sliding scale that decreased depending on the year the buyout was exercised. I am not sure on the exact number, but believe by year five the buyout was in the $1-2M range. So it has a 5 year term

So it has a 5 year term Yes Pitino originally signed a 5 year contract. Which is why he can still come back even with failed negotiations for a lifetime.

Then why all the talk about the buyout being dropped?

Then why all the talk about the buyout being dropped? My understanding is that the buyout was subsequently removed at some point after he signed his initial contract, presumably when they were negotiating an extension and failed to reach an agreement.

I knew he was well thought of by the Siena folks. When he landed the STAC job I went and watched probably close to 3 dozen games or so, and came away very impressed. He was sort of a combo of Cluess and Pitino, TC's offensive ball movement and getting the shots off quickly and Pitino's defensive schemes. At STAC he went 209–62 including five East Coast Conference regular season titles and six ECC tournament titles, reaching the NCAA Division II tournament in seven-straight seasons, including the Elite Eight in 2017. He did a great job recruiting and putting together the pieces to make it all work. My favorite bit of coaching he did during his STAC days was the ass whooping of St. John's 90–58 in an exhibition contest in 2015. That was Mullins first season and SJU had the following prized recruits: Malik Ellison (★★★) Christian Jones (★★★) Marcus LoVett (★★★★ Top 50) Durand Johnson (★★★★ Top 100) Felix Balamou (★★★) Tariq Owens (★★★) Kassoum Yakwe (★★★★) Yankuba Sima - (★★★) Darien Williams - (★★★) Anderson had one stud guard, 6'4" Justin Reyes who finished his career with 2247 points, 1144 rebounds and only one player bigger than 6'8" and that kid played maybe 15 min a game. Yet Tobin ran them off the court. Do you think we have a shot at him? Seems like a no brainer if Pitino bolts. He has kids that are young... Bryce (17) and Alexa (13). When he announced he was going to leave STAC and take another job they got very upset as they made it clear they did not want to move. They currently live in Blauvelt, NY. So it is safe to say that he will only, at this point, consider a job with a reasonable commute from Blauvelt. That leaves Iona, Columbia, Fordham, Manhattan and maybe SJU. What could sit in our favor is the fact that FDU's commitment to Div 1 sports has been questioned repeatedly over the last five years as they had reduced the number of assistants on all teams and had an undergraduate student serving as their communications director. Greg Herenda was making between $270k and $300K in total compensation at FDU before Tobin, so I think he is probably getting paid around the same amount. If we tossed $750K and some milestone payments, I think we would have a great shot to get him if Pitino leaves.

I would set the record for times blocked in one day

Seeing all the obnoxious St. John’s fans try to comprehend a HOF coach choosing Iona over their precious program.

While many of us are upset about the way this is being handled, we do not have all the info we need to see what might be going on. Maybe Pitino's aspirations for Iona were higher than the administrations? Maybe he was looking for improvements that Iona would not commit to? Or maybe he is the lying douche that many suspect? Either way he will make his decision this week. In the past, if any school waved $2million in front of our coaches they would have jumped at it. Remember Jeff Ruland saying that if the Seton Hall job opened up, 'he would run down I-95 to take it?'
If Pitino stays I think he will do great things. If he goes, Iona will be fine. I just wonder how his wife feels about him taking on more shit at this point in their lives. I also wonder how he does with all the lunatics that are SJU fans, if he is going to enjoy being watched 24/7 by the NCAA after basically giving them the finger. It is not like SJU has been clean over the years... Abe Keita getting paid to play, sexual misconduct by players, multiple player suspensions, players caught with drugs, impermissible gifts to players, two players assaulting a teammate in the shower. You would think that a man who just had his name cleared would be smart enough to not run with a program with so many warts.
Either way, I put my faith in God and that the decision, no matter what it is, is the correct one for Iona.

Great thread with lots of interesting takes.
If he stays, great.
If he leaves, whatever. We move on. Maybe the next head coach will come on my podcast!

Let’s not get crazy. Maybe we are not where we expected to be at this point in the RP era and we are clearly all a bit sour over the SJU speculation, but there is no way we can say our program is worse off with RP. That is a ridiculous statement. I believe the guy has a better winning percentage in a three year period than any coach in Iona history, he has beaten Top 10 teams, he has gotten us a 13 seed, he has recruited great talent and even better kids, he has sold out the HAC and created a better in-game atmosphere than we have had in decades. We should not be building statues for him any time soon, but we also should not be saying he has made the program worse. We 100% will be in a worse place if he leaves this year. We spent way more$$$, for the same results, might have no roster, no school, no tournaments planned.
