Per Haslametrics, Iona entered today as the 6th most erratic team in the country. We're probably gonna be even higher after today LOL. But certainly our last 3 games show we are not only erratic from game to game, but from half to half--and even smaller increments.
The erratic play is what triggers the emotion. We see the high end, and then we see the low end and we're all like WTF. But, we should understand the truth is in the middle, as our overall and league records show.
The erratic play is due to new coach, new system, new players, and freshmen in prominent roles. You can't say the new system thing is no longer valid, as many teams have many players with 2+ years in their systems--we are still "new" by comparison.
We took a step back today, but our overall play is trending upward, which is all we can ask for with the tourney a month out.
We are “wildly inconsistent “ that’s for sure! But We could still win this.
On a different note guys comments about how hard it is to win on the road in any league is so true and why the net and Ken Pom are so unfair to mid majors. You are simply going to lose road games, no matter what league you are in and who you are. But if you lose games in a mid major your ratings plummet. Stick Kansas in the maac and see if they go 11-0 on the road in these little gyms, odds are they don’t. Ken Pom once put out a tweet statistically proving that a top 10 team was unlikely to go undefeated in one of these small leagues, yet his system has ratings that make it seem like a decent mid major team should never lose on the road. This drives me crazy, especially when you are a good mid major, you simply can’t afford to ever lose, and that is extremely difficult!
And winning on the road should not be such a reward for a major . If st chicken wins today it will probably guarentee them a bid. But when you get 5 or so chances to get a road win against a top 25 team in conference, shouldn’t you win one if you are a nit type team. Too much reward for the majors when they do win one game on the road. They get so many chances!

St. Chicken loses again. 2-6 last 8, how is this an ncaa team. Jenkins and Pitino fighting at the end, love it!!!!
I'm with you sometimes man express what you feel about the games. I do it to.
But to say we should win all the games we were "supposed" to is silly. It's college basketball.
Were we supposed to beat SHU? Prob not. Played like crap most of the game but finished strong and won.
I mean this supposed to thing is kinda rediculous.
Iona never had a lead at any time during this game so they weren't supposed to win. They could have but they didn't. That's much different. Unless you are saying that because Iona was favored and is the better team they were supposed to win. If that's the case why even play the game?
This team has improved a ton but they're still clearly not quite there and have lapses that are frustrating and head scratching
I said losing because you didn't execute, or the other team just played better is one thing. Losing because you didn't play with any intensity for 30 minutes is totally different.
I also can't disagree enough that the split is acceptable, since that's the norm. Not after beating Niagara and playing a Canisius team that isn't playing well and only had 7 scholarship players. They played 4 starters 37+ minutes.
Tobin called 3 timeouts, and was fired up trying to spark the team, 1st 12 minutes of the game. Pretty safe to say he wasn't satisfied with the effort. Wanna bet Tobin and staff aren't traveling back from Buffalo, satisfied with the split?
Obviously I'm in minority. Game is over. We can agree to disagree.
We all get frustrated over some games, but just think of where our program is compared to Siena. I doubt any of us would want to change places with those poor bastards.
What about Rider? Picked 1st, preseason POY, lots of other talent. Heading toward 8-9 game and getting run by 20 by Marist at home. Criminal coaching performance by Baggett.
The greatest poster in the history of the MAAC as determined by THREE separate polls.
Quigley, Jean, Brown and Gordon all did some good things.
Oz looked tentative at times. Williams is a hot mess and I would say regarding Panzo, whether he’s cold or hot shooting, he needs to keep firing away as he’s our best chance.
Bates and Sultan can give average rest minutes.
Foul shooting and rebounding will continue to be an issue.
We are asking Panzo to fill a primary role that simply isn’t in his skill set. He is used to being an option as a spot shooter who cannot drive to the hoop. He does add some good things on defense, especially on the press, but often struggles to keep his man in front of him in half court defense. When Tretout returns Panzo can go back to his role as a scoring option, with less minutes played and less pressure on him, and we will be better as a team.
While we fans want to “fix” the problems we see I’m convinced that Tobin’s approach is very different. Put this in a consulting context. Tobin is a “system” guy and his primary focus is systems implementation; making sure the team learns to play his entire system. As fans we have a “performance improvement” focus; fix this, fix that. Tobin trusts his system and believes that once the team is playing it wins will follow.
Well, we could have lost to Rider and Niagara, and instead be 5-7.
Lol we were up 20 in both those games with 8 mins to play. I’m saying we have let numerous, winnable games get away and have yet to snatch any games from the jaws of defeat.

Good post.
Assuming no one of consequence transfers out, think about the difference entering next season from this one. JQ, Aranguren and Gordon will all start and will all know the system. Guys like Adewale and to a lesser extent Bates, Saunders and Brice will at least won't be starting from square one. That's 7 guys who aren't coming in green. Big, big difference.
Further, if we wanted an experienced center who can have an impact right away, we can do that via the portal. And we already have 3 frosh that for all we know can be just as impactful as JQ and Jean.
I didn't enter this season with high expectations, even though I thought we had a chance to be good. I think we learned a lot about portal hazards and looking beyond the numbers to culture of where they were and their role there. I know I did.
Hopeful we continue to improve this year and make some noise in AC, but also watching with an excited eye for the future.

Good points from both of you. If anything, I probably had lower expectations than either of you (Not in a bad way, just tough to rebuild that fast). So, I am satisfied at where we are. Hopefully we can continue to improve and that will give us a shot in AC. Whatever happens, short of a complete collapse, I am hopeful for the future. If I'm one of the other MAAC teams, well, you better get us this year.
