Crazy thing is that I'm not that upset about this. Maybe I'm developing a healthy perspective? ;D
We were up 17 and Manhattan started to make a run. They got pretty much all the breaks down the stretch, made some heady plays, played with great intensity, played great defense (Brown came up huge) and rebounded, and got pretty much every questionable foul call. The thing is, if you don't play much defense, then no lead is safe unless you continue to pour in the shots. Credit Manhattan for playing an agressive full court press then getting back and playing agressive defense.
Hard to play effective defense when we have three guys with four fouls. I'm glad we tried to play defense, we need to work on positioning, etc.
We need to work on not making silly fouls. The two that come immediately to mind are Sean's second, which took him out of the game when he was in an MSG type of mode, and Ridley's 3rd 15 seconds into the second half.
Normally when we're up on an opponent we can just wear them down with depth, but this Manhattan team is deep and very well conditioned. Got to play 40 minutes against them. Maybe we can learn from this, Coach and players.
How do teams get a home court advantage? Do we have to schmooze with the refs or something? I know we're not Carolina, but when we played there if you simply looked at a Tar Heel, you got a whistle.
As for the last second shot, thought we played good defense and were in good position. There is nothing you can do when a guy makes a shot like that out of his you know what. Nothing. Can't feel bad about that, in fact its almost comical. Its not like the guy had a wide open look. If we keep playing good D in those spots, we'll get the result. Agree with JC's point that you don't want to put yourself in a position where something freaky will happen. And we'll get some of these shots to fall if the guys just believe in themselves, like MoMo did last night.
We can forget about an at large now and just go into learning mode and focus on the MAAC tourney and figure out how to get it done in Springfield.

Manhattan dictated the last 5 minutes of the game. We looked unprepared for the press. Jenkins should have been brought in earlier. Players were looking to the bench for instruction.

I was at the game and thought with the score around 30-13 the officals called fouls on us on 4-5 posessions in a row. This put two starter on the bench and slowed the game to down. of course we were up by 17 at the half, but my point is it could have been 27.
In the second half manhattn sinply outwilled us, played better ans a lot smarter, and we still don't box out on defense and we will continue to pay the price.
Additionally we have to be one of the worst half court offenses in the country.
Does this go to the players, coach or both?

I'm seeing lots of excuses, but I'll repeat--we lost this game for two reasons: we didn't match their intensity and we don't play any f-ing defense.
This is not a championship team unless they drastically improve on the defensive end. They don't have to be a "good" defensive team with that offense. But they at least have to get to average.

Obviously its not the way we want to play. Got to give credit to Manhattan's defense. We created good looks under the basket at least three times that Brown rejected, twice for Glove and once for Ridley, as I recall. Sean was draining 3's in the first half in the half court set, then commits a foul 75 feet from the basket that makes him sit out. He's a smart kid; he needs to play smarter.

It's easy to forget that they are really kids with short attention spans. It's up to the coach to address their tendency to take certain opponents lightly, and to stop playing hard with a big lead. They have proven they can beat quality opponents in a tight game (St. Joe's and Denver), but Cluess has his work cut out for him getting this team to be consistently intense. And by God start playing effective defense for 40 minutes. For all of the physical talent they have their defense is just terrible.
Now we'll see just how good a coach Cluess really is. I think he can handle this.

Always in awful rebounding position and try to outjump for the board.

I think some of the rebounding positioning and the defensive positioning late in the shot clock can be attributed to it being ingrained in the team by Cluess to get the ball and get off to the races. We practiced with a ten second shot clock. We need to find some balance here. Its the old saying, be quick but don't rush. We have to actually get the rebound before we can go off on a break. And we have to be in better position on D. We can't let a guy get position and reach in for these ticky tack fouls because we're already thinking of getting up the floor on offense.

While I love Fields I don't see how he gets minutes over Jenkins or James.

Ridley, 2 year of community college. Smyth a red shirt Junior. MoMo, very experienced coming from a PAC 12 school. I am not buying that excuse.

As I wait for the hemlock to take effect, there is the comforting thought that the Hofstra game no longer seems so bad. Cluess used the summary word: "Disgraceful".

What I want to see is that if certain players aren't playing with intensity, play someone else, don't just stick with the same 5 guys. Momo wasn't himself and Dezouvre logged more minutes than usual and got tired. Play Jermel and Rashad in those situations, at least for a few minutes.

Defense certainly is an issue, can't allow 53 points in a half; that's the major problem. The other issue is setting up in the half court offense after breaking the press, the team looked unprepared to execute once they broke Mid court. Also someone should tell Armand that if your ripping it up; avoid the foolish fouls that get you out of the game. Finally, Masiello work the refs far better than Cluess last night.

Last 8 minutes of the game we seemed to be playing the clock...lost all of our offensive intensity...when Manhattan was on their major run at the end Scott and Momo spent too much time looking at Coach/the bench and appeared tentative and unsure...sorry to disagree with some posters but imo we were jobbed by refs in 2nd half...give the Jaspers props they still made their shots and the best of almost all of their oppotunities...they definitely got into Scott's head...Brown was an absolute beast for them on the boards and we had no answer him...I thought a real turning point was when he blocked Glove on two successive possessions...still if we had hit a few open shots, or if Glove had converted on that 1 and 1 at the end we might have pulled it out...for me it was like watching a train wreck...total friggin' collapse...a disaster...plus, I can't stand Masiello now...arrogant f*** at the end of the game.
